Sharing one of our "lockdown devotional" Shalom!
The rule of the game is: FAITH
The escalating outbreak of COVID 19 brings the question, "Where is God at times like this?" Despite the preparation of the world government and the prayers of the church it looks like it's getting even worse--increased number of reported cases, death tolls, panic buying, lockdown and mostly political issues. It is important as a community that we always defer in His words when this kind of questions distorts our perspective of who He is and distracts our path of living by faith.
Two important kings in the Old Testament shares a good perspective of life at times of illness and suffering--King Asa and King Hezekiah.
Both had an illness and suffered badly during their time: King Hezekiah was confronted by the Lord that he will die and will not recover.(2 Kings 20:1)
King Asa, had a severe disease in his feet. (2 Chronicles 16:12). Yet, there was a difference between them: how they RESPOND and how they RECOGNIZE God on their situation.
King Asa, as it says in 2 Chronicles 16:12:.. "Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he DID NOT seek help from the LORD, but only from the physicians."
What this verse is saying,
"LOOK AT THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD BEYOND THE SEVERITY OF THE SITUATION"
Yes, our frontliners are doing all the sacrifice and we are grateful about it and above this let's continue to seek God beyond the severity of this virus outbreak...regardless of how bad and serious the outcome is the next day we wake up. Remind ourselves that GOD IS SOVEREIGN.
Now, King Hezekiah, it says in 2 Kings 20:1-5:.. "Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD..." And the Lord showed his mercy to King Hezekiah in the following verses it says,.. "I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you.. I will add fifteen years to your life."
King Hezekiah turned his face to the WALL: ( Imagine for a moment...God told him that he will be illed and will not recover...it is a DEAD END already. At times like this, when we feel like it is the dead-end we start to lose our strength, our positive outlook... we start to worry and panic... overwhelmed by the WALL.
One thing we should not miss on this verse is the word " AND" which implies a "connection". God never meant us to be in a dead end situation. It says there, "AND he (King Hezekiah) prayed to the Lord". The story could have ended with a hopeless King Hezekiah just facing the wall (maybe punching or crying over it) but it never ended that way...he connected to God.
Right now, we are facing an overwhelming WALL... the Covid-19. There are two things that we can do when it is a "dead end": First, seek for a DETOUR (temporarily replacing part of a route; implies dependence to oneself) but the bible tells us to seek for a DIRECTION (assistance in pointing out the proper route; implies dependence to God). Just like the song.... "Way-maker, Miracle worker, Promise-keeper... Light in the darkness" that is who our God is!
Now, both king died... King Asa lived for 2 more years. King Hezekiah lived for 15 more years. It only shows that everything we know and we do here on earth is temporal and it applies to all. However, God is in the look out on things that remains unshaken (Hebrew 12:27). King Asa, never sought God but King Hezekiah connected his FAITH to this Sovereign God. Our FAITH has the sense of eternity in it so don't be shaken!
In Habakkuk 2:3 it says,
For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.
The answers on your prayer right now AWAITS an appointed time... it says WAIT for it... it WILL CERTAINLY come... it WILL NOT DELAY. The promise of the Lord is RENEWED strength for those who wait (Isaiah 40:31)
Let's give our FAITH a good fight!
