THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE: The Call to Move Forward

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." -Isaiah 41:10

REFLECTION:

We are not be afraid of life, and we are not to be overly careful and calculating. If we wish to move forward, we must take risks. Christ's call to freedom involves taking risks. He invites us to reach out and grasp the new.

This does not mean that we should wildly dive into any and every project. We do need to be discerning, to wait and pray. Yet we will never have ironclad certainty about anything, not even as a result of our carefully devised plans or faithful prayers. Sometimes, we just have to move forward. Living by faith and obedience is not without its challenges.

The Holy Spirit calls us forward. Agnes Sanford describes adventure in this way: "I would not go all of my life in the bo***ge of heading only on a known path lest I step upon a snake. I would go through the untrodden country toward the goal of my choice, whether or not I trod upon a snake."

This approach to life is not wild and reckless. It is an expression of the impulse to be free. It is born of the desire to express our faith. Such an outlook on life helps us to attempt to realize our goals. This sense of adventure gives life a particular quality. It also puts us on the road to true achievement.

For some, the challenge is not to embark on the road of adventure for the first time, but to step out again after failure. This involves overcoming the pain of disappointment and despair, and trying again. This requires courage. But this will certainly plunge us into the adventure of life once more.

Pray that the Lord will grant you to never stop dreaming, planning and hoping. Pray that fear or past disappointments may not hold you back from embarking on new dreams and plans.
