Starting tomorrow until end of Holy Week, as part of our Lenten discipline, let us refrain from clapping during and after the Holy Mass.
When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, she commemorates Christ's Passover, and at the same time that single sacrifice of Christ at Calvary is made present for us. We are being brought to that moment in Calvary during the Eucharist (CCC #1364, cf. Heb 7:25-27). Lent is basically a preparation for Good Friday. Do you still think clapping is appropriate?
Some would argue that they clap to express their joy and thanksgiving but by that we are reducing the Liturgy to a prayer service or a social event just made to entertain us. We must always remember that the Mass is the ๐๐-๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐ก๐๐๐ of Jesus Christ's sacrifice of the cross (CCC #1366, cf. 1 Cor 11:23-26). The Mass is the greatest form of Christian prayer and worship, therefore, clapping adds no value.
Starting tomorrow, let us discipline ourselves and avoid clapping.
