GENESIS 2:7-9; 3:1-7

A reading from the Book of Genesis

The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground
and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.

Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east,
and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals
that the LORD God had made. The serpent asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" The woman answered the serpent: "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'"
But the serpent said to the woman: "You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it
your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil." The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

🙏Responsorial Psalm
PSALMS 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17

:
BE MERCIFUL, O LORD,
FOR WE HAVE SINNED.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

:
BE MERCIFUL, O LORD,
FOR WE HAVE SINNED.

For I acknowledge my offense,
and my sin is before me always:
"Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight."

:
BE MERCIFUL, O LORD,
FOR WE HAVE SINNED.

A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

:
BE MERCIFUL, O LORD,
FOR WE HAVE SINNED.

Give me back the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

:
BE MERCIFUL, O LORD,
FOR WE HAVE SINNED.

🙏Second Reading
ROMAN 5:12-19

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters:
Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned—for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world,
though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one, the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many. And the gift is not like the result of the one who sinned. For after one sin there was the judgment that brought condemnation; but the gift, after many transgressions, brought acquittal. For if, by the transgression of the one, death came to reign through that one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of justification come to reign in life through the one Jesus Christ. In conclusion, just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so, through one righteous act, acquittal and life came to all. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of the one, the many will be made righteous.

MATTHEW 4:4b

One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

✝ Gospel
MATTHEW 4:1-11

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew

At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, "If you are the Son of God,
command that these stones become loaves of bread." He said in reply,
"It is written: One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."

Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:
He will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone." Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test." Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him,
"Get away, Satan!
It is written:
The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve."

Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Ash Wednesday 2026: A Call to Return to God

Ash Wednesday, celebrated on February 18, 2026, marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent—a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. On this day, the faithful receive ashes on their foreheads, accompanied by the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”

The ashes, made from blessed palms of the previous year’s Palm Sunday, are a powerful sign of humility and repentance. They remind us of our human frailty and our deep need for God’s mercy. Ash Wednesday is not merely a ritual, but a heartfelt invitation to conversion—to turn away from sin and renew our relationship with God.

As a day of fasting and abstinence, Ash Wednesday calls Catholics to simplicity, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection. More than giving something up, Lent invites us to give ourselves more fully to God and to others through love, forgiveness, and charity.

Ash Wednesday 2026 begins a sacred journey of forty days—a journey that leads us from ashes to resurrection, from repentance to renewal, and from the cross to the joy of Easter.

🙏FIRST READING
1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30

A reading from the first letter of Kings

Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of the whole community of Israel, and stretching forth his hands toward heaven, he said, “LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below; you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants who are faithful to you with their whole heart.

“Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth? If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you, how much less this temple which I have built! Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God, and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your servant, utter before you this day. May your eyes watch night and day over this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall be honored; may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer in this place. Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel which they offer in this place.
Listen from your heavenly dwelling and grant pardon.”

The Word of the Lord.

🙏RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 84:3, 4, 5 and 10, 11

HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE,
LORD, MIGHTY GOD!

My soul yearns and pines
for the courts of the LORD.
My heart and my flesh
cry out for the living God.

HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE,
LORD, MIGHTY GOD!

Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest
in which she puts her young—
Your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my king and my God!

HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE,
LORD, MIGHTY GOD!

Blessed they who dwell in your house!
continually they praise you.
O God, behold our shield,
and look upon the face of your anointed.

HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE,
LORD, MIGHTY GOD!

I had rather one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE,
LORD, MIGHTY GOD!

🙏ALLELUIA

✝ GOSPEL
Mark 7:1-13

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
(For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.) So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?" He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:

This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.

You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."
He went on to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition!
For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother, and Whoever curses father or mother shall die. Yet you say, 'If someone says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things."

✝ MASS READINGS

🙏 First Reading
1 KINGS 8:1-7, 9-13

A reading from the first Book of Kings

The elders of Israel and all the leaders of the tribes, the princes in the ancestral houses of the children of Israel,
came to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD’s covenant from the City of David, which is Zion.
All the people of Israel assembled before King Solomon
during the festival in the month of Ethanim (the seventh month). When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark; they carried the ark of the LORD and the meeting tent with all the sacred vessels that were in the tent. (The priests and Levites carried them.)

King Solomon and the entire community of Israel present for the occasion sacrificed before the ark sheep and oxen
too many to number or count. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place beneath the wings of the cherubim in the sanctuary, the holy of holies of the temple. The cherubim had their wings spread out over the place of the ark, sheltering the ark and its poles from above.
There was nothing in the ark but the two stone tablets which Moses had put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel at their departure from the land of Egypt.

When the priests left the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the LORD so that the priests could no longer minister because of the cloud, since the LORD’s glory had filled the temple of the LORD. Then Solomon said, “The LORD intends to dwell in the dark cloud; I have truly built you a princely house, a dwelling where you may abide forever.”

The Word of the Lord.

🙏Responsorial Psalm
PSALMS 132:6-7, 8-10

LORD, GO UP TO THE PLACE OF YOUR REST!

Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found it in the fields of Jaar.
Let us enter into his dwelling,
let us worship at his footstool.

LORD, GO UP TO THE PLACE OF YOUR REST!

Advance, O LORD, to your resting place,
you and the ark of your majesty.
May your priests be clothed with justice;
let your faithful ones shout merrily for joy.
For the sake of David your servant,
reject not the plea of your anointed.

LORD, GO UP TO THE PLACE OF YOUR REST!

✝ Gospel
MARK 6:53-56

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark

After making the crossing to the other side of the sea,
Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret and tied up there. As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him. They scurried about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.
