His life wasn't just marked by the extraordinary gift of bilocation, but by an even greater miracle: a heart completely detached from the world, deeply devoted to the Eucharist, and filled with radical charity. Most bishops are remembered for their sermons.
Archbishop Teofilo Camomot was remembered for something far more unusual.
People said they saw him in two places at the same time.
Born in Carcar, Cebu, Archbishop Camomot lived with remarkable simplicity. He owned little, dressed modestly, and gave away almost everything he had to the poor.
If a beggar needed shoes, he would give away his own.
If a family needed money, he would empty his pockets.
When someone once asked him what he would do after giving away everything he had, he simply replied:
"God will provide."
And somehow, God always did.
His life was marked by deep prayer and devotion to the Eucharist. Many who met him said they felt an extraordinary sense of peace in his presence.
But the stories that surrounded him became even more astonishing.
One day, during an official Church meeting, Cardinal Ricardo Vidal personally saw Archbishop Camomot seated beside him.
The archbishop participated in the proceedings and was physically present throughout the gathering.
Yet at the very same time, witnesses in the mountains of Carcar claimed they saw him administering the Last Sacraments to a dying person.
The testimonies were so serious that Archbishop Camomot himself reportedly signed an affidavit acknowledging the witness account.
Many believed he had been granted the mystical gift of bilocation—a phenomenon associated with saints such as and .
But perhaps the greatest miracle was not bilocation.
It was his humility.
Cardinal Vidal once noticed that Archbishop Camomot was no longer wearing his pectoral cross. Later, it was discovered that he had pawned it to obtain money for the poor.
He had literally given away the symbol of his office to help those in need.
On May 21, 2022, declared Archbishop Teofilo Camomot Venerable, recognizing his heroic virtues.
Whether people remember him for bilocation, his generosity, or his deep prayer life, one thing is certain:
Long before Rome recognized his holiness, the poor of Cebu already knew they had met a saint.
