GREEN IN ORDINARY TIME

During Ordinary Time, the liturgical color green is used to symbolize hope, life, and growth. It reminds the faithful of their ongoing spiritual growth and the call to live out Christโ€™s teachings in daily life. Green is worn on vestments and displayed in the Church to mark this season as a time of steady conversion and the flourishing of Christian life.

EMERGENCY BAPTISM

In the Catholic Church, baptism is the sacrament that brings a person into Godโ€™s life. Normally, it is given by a priest, deacon, or bishop. But if someone is in danger of death, anyone can baptize, even a layperson, as long as they intend to do what the Church does.

The minister pours water on the personโ€™s head three times or immerses them three times, while saying:
โ€œI baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.โ€

This ensures that no soul is denied Godโ€™s grace, even in the most urgent situations.

The beginning of the new civil year, the Liturgy offers us the text of a beautiful blessing: โ€œMay the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peaceโ€.

Dear brothers and sisters, on this Solemnity, at the beginning of the new year, and as we approach the conclusion of the Jubilee of Hope, let us draw near to the Nativity scene in faith. Let us approach it as the place of โ€œunarmed and disarmingโ€ peace par excellence โ€“ a place of blessing where we recall the wonders the Lord has worked in the history of salvation and in our own lives.

โ€œCalled in the Gospels โ€˜the mother of Jesusโ€™, Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the prompting of the Spirit and even before the birth of her son, as โ€˜the mother of my Lordโ€™. In fact, the One whom she conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Fatherโ€™s eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly โ€˜Mother of Godโ€™ (Theotokos).โ€ (CCC 495)

OUR THREE CELEBRATIONS ON JANUARY 1

1. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD
On this day, the Church honors Mary as the Mother of God, the one who bore Jesus Christ, true God and true man. As the new year begins, we place ourselves under her maternal care, trusting that she will always lead us to her Son.

2. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE
January 1 is also a day dedicated to praying for peace throughout the world. The Church reminds us that true peace is a gift from God and a responsibility entrusted to every Christian, beginning in our hearts and lived out in love, justice, and reconciliation.

3. NEW YEARโ€™S DAY IN THE CIVIL CALENDAR
While the world marks this day as the start of a new year, the Church gives it deeper meaning by sanctifying time through prayer and worship. We offer the year ahead to God, asking for His guidance, mercy, and blessings in all that lies before us.

January 1 invites us to begin the year with faith, prayer, and hope, placing God at the center of our lives from the very first day.

GOVERNED BY CHRIST, NOT FENG SHUI

For Catholics, our lives and time are not guided by feng shui, zodiac signs, or horoscopes, but by Christ Himself. Every year is Anno Domini โ€” belonging to the Lord who reigns over history and our lives.

We place our trust not in superstition, but in Godโ€™s providence, proclaiming with faith: Jesus is Lord of this year.
