Jesus says, "I AM the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." (Today's Gospel)

The Jews who were listening thought Jesus was talking about ordinary bread, and so they asked Him to give it to them always. But He meant something much deeper and far greater. He is not offering something that merely sustains life for a moment; He offers Himself as the One who satisfies the deepest hunger of the human heart.

When Jesus says, “I AM,” He is not speaking casually. He is revealing His divine identity, echoing the name God gave in Exodus: “I AM WHO AM.” The Bread He gives is not just symbolic nourishment. In the Eucharist, we receive His Body and Blood—and inseparably, His Soul and Divinity. This is a mystery so profound that it reshapes our entire understanding of what it means to be filled. Earthly things—success, comfort, recognition—can satisfy for a time, but they cannot reach the core of our longing. Only God can.

When our faith firmly embraces this mind-blowing truth, we will stop hungering and thirsting for passing earthly goods that satisfy only a while, then leave us craving for more. Preferring instead ever-deeper communion with Jesus, we seek out His Mind in the Bible so we may learn to think, decide and move in step with Him.

Like St. Stephen, a server in the early Church and the first martyr for Christ (First Reading), fear of death will no longer stop us from serving the Lord, totally convinced that whatever may happen, Jesus is waiting for us, seated on the righthand side of His Father. We recall His unfailing promise, "Where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me." (John 12:26)

When we eat the Sacrament of Christ, the Father also transforms us into His mini-sacraments, so that whoever comes to us will never leave hungry or thirsty.
