𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐓. 𝐉𝐔𝐃𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐔𝐒

Every October 28, the Church honors St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of lost causes, desperate situations, hospitals, and Armenia. Though much about his life remains unknown, St. Jude was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles and is traditionally believed to have been His cousin. To distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, Scripture refers to him simply as “Jude.”

St. Jude was the son of Mary (a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and Cleophas (believed to be St. Joseph’s brother). As an apostle, he devoted his life to spreading the Gospel throughout Galilee, Samaria, Judea, Mesopotamia, Libya, Turkey, Persia, and Armenia, often in partnership with St. Simon. Around 60 A.D., he wrote the Epistle of Jude, a letter urging Christians to remain firm in their faith and to guard themselves against false teachers.

His deep faith ultimately led to his martyrdom around 65 A.D. in Persia or Syria. Today, his relics rest in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, alongside those of St. Simon. Because of his courage, steadfastness, and unwavering trust in God, St. Jude is venerated as the patron of hopeless and desperate cases.

In sacred art, St. Jude is often shown holding an image of Jesus, symbolizing the miraculous healing of King Abgar of Edessa through the Image of Edessa, a relic historically associated with the Shroud of Turin. Other symbols include a flame above his head, representing the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and a club or axe, signifying his martyrdom. He is sometimes depicted with a scroll or book, referring to his New Testament epistle.

Through his life, ministry, and sacrifice, St. Jude Thaddeus continues to be a shining example of faith, perseverance, and hope in times of struggle. In our moments of despair, he reminds us to place our trust in God’s boundless mercy.

May his witness inspire us to remain steadfast in faith and courageous in hope.
