Most Christians throughout the past 1700 years or so only knew they could have their sins forgiven and go to heaven when they died. And, even then, they weren’t sure of that. The information about who they were in God’s sight got lost in 2 things: (1) illiteracy of the Bible—lack of education and knowledge of what it actually says, and (2) slavery to poor teaching that one has to live by the church’s rules to maintain God’s acceptance.

The key to a disciplemaking church is the disciplemaking pastor. Who’s in charge here? In every intentional disciplemaking church, the senior pastor champions the disciplemaking vision. The disciplemaking vision cannot be simply delegated out to a staff or board member. That would not be a delegation of task but an abdication of responsibility! Until the senior pastor is fully onboard, the effort is quite in vain.
Senior pastors who are disciplemaking pastors are quite passionate about it. They model it and will do their best to articulate a clear and compelling vision for disciplemaking. They will preach it over the pulpit, write it in the church bulletin, share it with their staff, their church leadership and their congregation. They will do whatever it takes to ensure that the vision gets across and the fire is ignited!
