23 August | Saint Rose of Lima

Historians remember St. Rose of Lima for her piety and chastity. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful.

Her beauty was so great that she was nicknamed "Rose," a name that remains with her to this day. According to legend, a servant had a vision where her face turned into a rose. At her confirmation in 1597, she officially took the name of Rose.
From an early age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She often prayed and fasted in secret. She performed secret penances, some of which were painful and severe. She performed daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and took daily communion.

As a young woman, her beauty began to attract suitors. To deter these men, St. Rose marred her face, rubbing it with pepper to make it blister. She cropped her hair short.
Her parents opposed her plan to take a vow of chastity. This resulted in a clash of wills, because her parents wanted her to marry. Her father eventually relented and gave her a room to herself.

St. Rose kept herself cloistered in her room, spending long periods in prayer. It was said she slept only two hours per night so as to have more time for prayer.
She quit eating meat altogether, an extreme dietary restriction for that time.

When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. On one occasion she burned her hands as a self-imposed act of penance.

She was known to wear a heavy silver crown, with spikes that could pierce her flesh. The spikes reminded her of the Crown of Thorns. At one point, one of the spikes become so lodged in her skull that the crown was removed with great difficulty.
St. Rose died in on August 25, 1617, at the age of 31. According to legend, she accurately predicted the date of her death. Her funeral was a major event attended by all the city's authorities.

Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667 and Pope Clement X recognized her as a saint, canonizing her in 1671. Her feast day is August 23 around the world, although some countries, like Peru, celebrate her on August 30.

St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems.

Today, Jesus asks each of us the same question He asked His disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” This is not merely a question to be answered with words, but with the way we live our lives every day.

Faith can easily become routine if we are not careful. We may know prayers by heart, attend Mass regularly, and participate in Church activities, yet still fail to deepen our personal relationship with Christ. The Lord invites us to move beyond habit and encounter Him anew. He calls us to recognize Him as the center of our lives, the source of our hope, and the reason for our service.

Like St. Peter, may we have the courage to profess our faith in Jesus, not only with our lips but also through our actions. As we renew our answer to His question today, may our hearts be rekindled with love for Christ and may our lives become a living witness to the Gospel for others.

QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY | August 22

The Blessed Virgin Mary has “Queenly” dignity as the Mother of “The King of kings, and Lord of lords”, and we know this under the guidance and unerring teachings of the Catholic Church. The Fathers of the Church, Doctors of the Church, and Popes, down through the centuries have given authoritative expression to this truth and this is clearly expressed in the art we find in our Church and Liturgy.

Pope Pius XII, by his encyclical letter on October 11, 1954, granted unanimous desire of the faithful and their pastors, and instituted the Feast of the “Queenship of Mary”. With the certainty of faith we know that Jesus Christ is King in the full, literal, and absolute sense of the word, for He is true God and true Man. Mary, in a limited way, shared in His royal works. She was the Mother of Christ, and Christ is God. She shared in the work of the Divine Redeemer, in His struggles against enemies and in the triumph He won over them all.

From this union with Christ the King, she assuredly obtains so eminent a status that she stands high above all created things, and upon this same union with Christ, is based that Royal privilege enabling her to distribute treasures of the Kingdom of the Divine Redeemer. This same union with Christ is the fountain of the inexhaustible efficacy of Her motherly intercession in the presence of the Son and of the Father.
Without doubt – the Blessed Virgin Mary posses a dignity that far transcends all other creatures. In the eyes of her Son, she takes precedence over everyone else.

Remember, that the Mother of God from the moment of her conception, Mary was filled with such a plenitude of grace “as to surpass the graces enhancing all the saints”. Pope Pius IX wrote in his “Ineflabilis Deus”, “More than all the angels and all the saints has God ineffably freely endowed Mary with the fullness of the heavenly gifts that abound in the Divine treasury; and she, preserving herself ever immaculately clean from the slightest taint of sin, attained a fullness of innocence and holiness so great as to be unthinkable apart from God Himself, a fullness that no one other than God will ever possess”.

Moving forward in piety and Faith, we glory in knowing the Virgin Mother of God bears the Royal Scepter in her hand, while her heart is ever aflame with Motherly love for us all.

FEAST OF ST. EZEKIEL MORENO | August 19

Today, August 19, marks the Feast of St. Ezekiel Moreno—Bishop, Missionary, and the Patron Saint of Cancer Patients, who dedicated his life to the poor and sick.

Preaching in Batangas, Cavite, Manila, and Palawan in the 1880's, his dedication and love for the lay faithful in the Philippines earned him their trust and respect, who witnessed his integrity not only as a priest who administered the sacraments for them, but also as a steadfast member in their communities whom they could turn to in their needs.

In his final years, Moreno returned to Spain, following a diagnosis for cancer of the palate, to get it treated. Despite his suffering, he bore his sickness with utmost faith until his passing on August 19 of the same year.

On his feast, we remember the life St. Ezekiel Moreno had led, the lives he had touched, and those whom he had changed with his intercession.

FEAST OF ST. HELENA | August 18

St. Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great and an Empress of the Roman Empire. Very little is known about Helena's early life, but it is believed she is from Drepanum (later known as Helenopolis) in Asia Minor and born into a poor family and lower class in the Roman culture of the day. St. Ambrose described Helena as a "good stable-maid."

Despite her background, Helena married Constantius Chlorus. With him she birthed her only son, Constantine. around the year 274. Nearly two decades later in 292, Constantius, now co-Regent of the West, got swept up in his rising stature and divorced Helena for Theodora, the step-daughter of Emperor Maximinianus Herculius. It is believed he did this to advance his own reputation and advance his standing in the Roman society.

Constantine was forever loyal to his dear mother, whom he loved very much. As he grew and became a member of the inner circle, he never left Helena's side. Following the death of Constantius in 308, Constantine became Emperor and summoned his mother back into inner circle and the imperial court. Helena received the title of Augusta.

Constantine ordered all to honor his mother. He even had coins minted, bearing her image. Through her son's influence, Helena began to embrace Christianity. With her title of Augusta Imperatrix, Helena was given free reign over the imperial treasury. She was tasked with locating relics of Christian tradition.

Between the years 326-328, Helena took a trip to the Holy Places in the Middle East. During her journey, Helena had many churches constructed, including the one at the site of Jesus Christ's birth - the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem and another at the site of his ascension - Church of Eleona on the Mount of Olives.

During this time Jerusalem was still being rebuilt after Titus' destruction. Around the year 130, Emperor Hadrian had a temple built over the site of Jesus' death. This temple was believed to be dedicated to Venus. Helena had this temple destroyed and chose a site in this location to be excavated. This led to the discovery of three crosses.

Tradition says Helena brought a woman near death to the crosses. There she had the woman place a hand on all three crosses. Nothing happened when she touched the first two crosses, but when she placed her hand on the third cross she suddenly recovered. Helena declared the third cross to be the True Cross. At this site, Constantine ordered the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to be built.

Theodoret of Cyrus, an influential theologian, wrote that that during her search, Helena also discovered the nails of the crucifixion. She had one of the nails placed in Constantine's helmet and one in the bridle of his horse to aid him with their miraculous powers. Churches were built at these sites, as well.

Several of the relics believed to be found by St. Helena are located in Cyprus. Among these are parts of Jesus' tunic, pieces of the holy cross, and pieces of the rope used to tie Jesus to the cross. When Helena returned to Rome from Jerusalem in 327, she brought parts of the True Cross back with her. She stored these in her palace's chapel. They can still be seen to this day, though her palace has been converted to the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.

St. Helena died around 330 with her dearly devoted son by her side. She was then buried in the Mausoleum of Helena outside of Rome. Her sarcophagus can be seen in the Pio-Clementine Vatican Museum.

St. Helena was renowned for helping not only individuals, but entire communities through her works of charity. She often sought out to help the poor and destitute. She would visit churches and leave them with rich donations. St. Helena was a very devout servant of God, so much so that one would easily believe her to have been a follower of Jesus Christ from birth. Through her influence and work, Christianity continued to spread throughout the known world.

In the afternoon of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the image of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, under the care of the Pacina Family, was brought in a Solemn Foot Procession through the community.

With prayers, hymns, and the faithful walking in devotion, the procession became a beautiful expression of the enduring Marian devotion of the people of Bantayan.

After the procession, the sacred image was brought back to the Pacina Family ancestral home, where the community gathered for the traditional singing of the Gozos—a cherished expression of praise, love, and devotion to Our Lady.

May this beautiful tradition continue to be handed down from one generation to another, keeping alive the faith and Marian devotion that have long been part of the heritage of Bantayan.

Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption | Segunda Patrona

On August 15, 2026, the Parroquia de San Pedro Apostol joyfully celebrated the Feast of our Segunda Patrona, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption), with the Holy Mass presided over by our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Rogelio Piloton Jr.

In his homily, Fr. Rogelio reflected on the deep Marian devotion that has been part of the history and identity of Bantayan. While there may be no definitive document identifying Our Lady of the Assumption as the parish's second patron—and there are historical discussions pointing to San Roque or San Damaso—the Marian character of our community remains profound. Even before Bantayan became a parish, the convent was dedicated to Our Lady when the parish was established. This Marian heritage reminds us of our deep connection with the Apostles and disciples of Christ, especially our patron, San Pedro Apostol, whose life and mission were rooted in following Christ.

The celebration was also a moment of gratitude. During the Holy Mass, members of the Catholic Women's League (CWL) were presented with Certificates of Appreciation and images of San Pedro Apostol in recognition of their generous contribution as solicitors during the 446th Fiesta Celebration of our parish in June 2026. Their dedication and support greatly contributed to the success of our celebration.
