โ๏ธ The Lordโs Prayerโthe Our Fatherโholds a unique and sacred place in the Holy Mass.
It is the prayer taught by Christ Himself, prayed immediately before Holy Communion, and offered not as a private devotion but as the common prayer of the Church.
Yet in recent decades, questions have arisen among Catholics:
To answer this faithfully, we must look at history, liturgical law, pastoral guidance, and charity.

In the Roman Catholic liturgical tradition, the proper posture of the faithful during the Lordโs Prayer is hands joined or folded at the chest, known in Latin as "Manibus iunctis" or hands joined ๐.
This posture expresses:
โ
Reverence
โ
Humility
โ
Interior recollection
โ
Unity of body and soul in prayer
It has long been the customary posture of the laity during common prayers of the Mass.

The posture of hands raised and extended is called "Postura orans" (orans posture) or raised hands.
In the Mass, this posture is proper to the priest alone, because he prays in persona Christi, offering the prayer on behalf of the Church.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) consistently assigns this posture to the priest during:
๐The Collect
๐The Prayer over the Offerings
๐The Prayer after Communion
๐The Lordโs Prayer
The GIRM never instructs the faithful to assume the orans posture during the Our Father.
In liturgical law, this silence is meaningful:
what is not prescribed is not required.
This distinction preserves the sacramental roles within the Mass.

The practice of lay people raising hands during the Lordโs Prayer did not originate from the Roman Rite.
It became common in the late 20th century through the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movements, such as CCRM (Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement) and CFC (Couples for Christ) and other similar faith communities in the Church.
In charismatic spirituality, raised hands are used as a sign of:
๐Opening oneself to God
๐Surrender
๐Praise and trust
These gestures are meaningful and appropriate in prayer meetings, praise and worship services, and personal devotion.
However, the Holy Mass is not a charismatic prayer assembly. It is the public, sacramental worship of the Church, governed by liturgical law.
The Catholic Bishopsโ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has addressed this issue pastorally.
In its guidance, the CBCP has stated in substance that:
At the same time, the bishops emphasize:
๐Respect for liturgical norms
๐Avoiding division
๐Exercising charity
Thus, both postures are tolerated pastorally, but tolerance does not automatically mean liturgical ideal.
The GIRM sets out clear principles:
๐The orans posture is prescribed for the priest
๐The faithful participate vocally and interiorly
๐External gestures must reflect order and theology
The GIRM does not authorize the faithful to adopt priestly gestures during the Mass.
Therefore, the most proper posture for the faithful remains: Manibus iunctis โ hands joined.

Outside the Mass, the orans posture can be appropriate for the faithful:
๐When praying alone
๐In family prayer
๐In house prayer meetings
๐In gatherings without a priest
In such settings, there is no sacramental priest offering prayers on behalf of the assembly, so expressive gestures may be freely used.
In many Protestant communities, raised hands during communal prayer are common because:
โThere is no sacramental priesthood
โMany hold to the idea of a universal self-understood priesthood
โThe congregation collectively assumes intercessory gestures
The Catholic Church, however, maintains a distinct ministerial priesthood, which is visibly expressed in the liturgy through posture and gesture.
It is crucial to understand:
๐This issue is disciplinary, not doctrinal
๐It concerns order, not holiness
๐It regulates public worship, not personal devotion
The Church is not harsh or legalistic about hand gestures.
She simply asks for order, clarity, and unity in the Mass.
Whether hands are raised or folded, one truth remains unshaken:
๐God hears our prayers.
๐Grace does not depend on posture.
๐Faith is not measured by gestures.
๐Charity is greater than uniformity.
Yet because the Mass is not private prayer, Catholics are invited to follow the Churchโs discipline out of love and obedience, not fear.
The most proper posture for the faithful during the Lordโs Prayer in Mass is hands joined (manibus iunctis), respecting the orans posture as proper to the priest.
At the same time, the Church allows pastoral flexibility and calls for charity.
Let us choose:
๐Reverence over preference
๐Unity over insistence
๐Obedience over argument
For in the end, it is not the position of our handsโ
but the humility of our heartsโ
that lifts our prayer to the Father.
