Mount Carmel is a biblical place where the prophet Elijah dwelt.

The "Cuna" (Cradle) of the association in Panay and Guimaras, holding jurisdiction over all regional members in the Teresian Carmelite charism. It rises 1,742 feet above sea level and towers above Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. It was here where Elijah prayed to God for the salvation of Israel, which was suffering a terrible drought at the time. He continued to pray and sent his servant up the mountain several times to look for rain. On the seventh try, Elijah’s servant returned with good news. “Behold a little cloud arose out of the sea like a man’s foot” (1 Kings 1:44). Soon thereafter, torrential rains fell upon the parched land and the people of Israel were saved. Elijah saw the cloud as a symbol of the Virgin mentioned in the prophecies of Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14). The hermits who lived on Mount Carmel followed Elijah’s example and prayed for the advent of the much-awaited Virgin, who would become the mother of the Messiah. The origins of the Carmelite Order can be traced back to Elijah and his hermited disciples. In the 13th century, during the Crusades, St. Simon Stock joined a group of hermits on Mount Carmel during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1247, he was elected the 6th superior-general of the Carmelites at the first chapter held in Aylesford, England. However, the order had difficulty gaining general acceptance and suffered much persecution and oppression from secular clergy and other orders which prompted the monks to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin in the year 1251. On Sunday July 16th, 1251, as Simon Stock knelt in prayer, Our Lady appeared to him, holding the Child Jesus in one arm and the Brown Scapular in the other. She uttered the following words: “Hoc erit tibi et cunctis Carmelitis privilegium, in hoc habitu moriens salvabitur” (This shall be the privilege for you and for all the Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall be saved). July 20 - Feast of Saint Elijah, the spiritual father and inspiration for the Carmelite (OCarm) and Discalced Carmelite (OCD) orders.

Holy Prophet of God Elijah, Leader and Father of Carmelites, intercede for us and for the salvation of all.

V: Pray for us, O holy Father Elijah.
R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.
Grant, we beseech You, O Almighty God, that we who believe that the Blessed Elijah Your Prophet and our Father was wonderfully carried up in a fiery chariot, may by his intercession be raised to the desire of heavenly things and rejoice in the society of Your saints. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Solemnity of St. Elijah the Prophet
The Spiritual Father of the Carmelite Order

The Prophet Elijah is the greatest of the Old Testament prophets and, with Moses, is one of the two great figures of the Hebrew Scriptures who represent the Law and the Prophets. In Hebrew, his name means ‘The Lord is my God’, and this he lived out in his life and work. He defended God on Mount Carmel as the one true God against the prophets of the false god, Baal, and for which he was hunted by Queen Jezebel. He is a key figure for the Carmelite Order whose early members lived beside the spring on Mount Carmel which was used by the prophet himself. His devotion to God, his prayer life, his intimate union with God are examples for Carmelites as they strive to bring God’s presence alive in the lives of others.

Prayer to St. Elijah:
Almighty God, we honor Your servant Elijah, who was impelled by You to bring the people to conversion. As he prayed fervently on Mount Carmel, so may we be strengthened in our prayers and devotion. Grant us courage to follow Your will, to resist sin, and to bear witness to Your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The prophet Elijah came from Tishbe in Gilead. Predicted draught during the time of Ahab, king of Israel. He helped the poor widow of Zerephat and resuscitate her son back to life. He challenged the 450 prophets of Baal in a contest at Mount Carmel, there he defeated them and shown the Israelites that the LORD is the true God and not Baal.
He fled to Horeb when Jezebel sought to kill him. At Horeb, he encountered God in "the murmur of a gentle breeze" (1 King 19:12)
The Scriptures relates that Elijah, did not die but was taken to the heavens in a whirlwind.

Almighty, ever living God, Your prophet Elijah, our Father, lived always in Your presence and was zealous for the honor due to Your name. May we, Your servants, always seek Your face and bear witness to Your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
