PATUNOB KANG SAN VICENTE FERRER
Patunob, or to be stepped on, is a religious ritual of placing an image of a saint over the head or shoulder of a devotee. By submitting oneself to patunob, the devotee places oneself under the intercession of the saint, expresses one’s resolve to pursue a life of holiness, and responds positively to the invitation of growing in charity and mission.
This ritual is soundly grounded on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which says that the saints "being more closely united to Christ… fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness…. intercede unceasingly with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men.” (cf. CCC, 956)
Thus, Patunob kang San Vicente Ferrer becomes our collective celebration of confidence in the Father through our miraculous patron and our shared commitment to emulate our patron’s love for the Lord and his untiring dedication to participate wholeheartedly in God’s mission.
If the liturgy permits it, a votive mass in honor of San Vicente Ferrer will be celebrated every Thursday at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. After the final blessing, the ritual of patunob follows.
