Today, we commemorate the Memorial of Saint Monica, Mother and Widow.
Saint Monica, who lived from around 332 to 387, is remembered as a model of patient, persevering, and trusting prayer. Married to a pagan husband and the mother of the young and wayward Augustine, she endured years of tears, sacrifices, and fervent supplication for the conversion of her family. Through her unwavering faith, humility, and steadfast love, she remained faithful in hope until her prayers were answered. Her son Augustine eventually embraced the Christian faith, was baptized, and became Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.
The life of Saint Monica reminds us that sincere prayer, offered with patience and trust, can become a powerful expression of love for our families and those we care for. Her perseverance teaches us not to lose hope when answers seem delayed, but to place everything in Godβs hands and trust in His perfect time. May her example inspire us to pray faithfully, forgive generously, and remain hopeful in the transforming power of Godβs mercy.
Let us pray:
O God, You strengthened Saint Monica with unwavering faith and persevering prayer for the conversion of her family. Through her intercession, teach us to entrust our families and loved ones to Your loving care with patience, humility, and hope. May we never cease praying for those who have lost their way, trusting that Your mercy can transform every heart according to Your perfect will. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Saint Monica, mother of persevering prayer, pray for us.
