Feast Day Sts. Pontian and Hippolytus

Tradition says that Hippolytus was born in the year A.D. 170. He was converted to Christianity by St. Lawrence. He was considered as a most important Christian theologian of third century. He used to frequently quarrel with bishops of Rome and has headed a rival group. For this reason he was called as antipope. He opposed the Roman bishops who have dealt with pagan converts to Christianity very leniently, when they joined the Christian community. During the reign of Emperor Maximinus of Thrax, Hippolytus and Pope Pontian were exiled to Sardinia in the year A.D. 235 for heading a rival group in Christianity. Pope Pontian reigned as pope from July 21, 230 to September 28, 235. When Pontian was exiled along with Hippolytus to Sardinia, Pontian abdicated from the papacy to enable the Church to elect a new Pontiff. Probably he was the first pope to abdicate papacy. Both were then killed in the infamous mines of Sardinia and died as Christian martyrs. Hippolytus has reconciled to the Church before his martyrdom. His body was brought to Rome and interned there on August 13, 236.

St. Hippolytus is venerated as a patron of prison guards, prison officers and prison workers.

Feast Day of St. Louis of Toulouse

St. Louis was born in the year 1274 in Brignoles. His father was Charles of Anjou and mother Maria Arpad of Hungary. Pope Clement-II appointed Charles, the father of this saint as King of Naples. But due to some war with king Peter-III of Aragon, Charles was taken as prisoner in Italy. But Charles secured his release and got freedom by giving his three sons as hostages. Therefore St. Louis was also was taken as a hostage with his other brothers. They were detained in the custody of the Franciscan Friars for safety. During captivity Louis was made archbishop of Lyon, when he attained majority age. He was consecrated as a Bishop at a very young age and was commented as a Boy Bishop. When his elder brother died, Louis became the legal heir of the thrown of the Kingdom of Naples. But after his release he went to Rome and gave-up his claim to the Throne of Naples in favor of his younger brother Robert. He became a Franciscan Friar and took the vow of chastity, poverty and obedience. He was then consecrated as Bishop of Toulouse on February 5, 1297. He gained the reputation of serving the poor people by even ignoring his personal requirements or needs. He died at the Age of 23, on August 19, 1297, due to typhoid fever.

He was canonized by Pope John-XXII on April 7, 1317.

Jordan has officially launched national preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, to be marked in 2030.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the Preparation of the Celebration of the Second Millennium of the Baptism of Jesus Christ. The committee includes government ministers, Church leaders, and representatives of key institutions.

The traditional site of the baptism is Al-Maghtas on the Jordan River. Plans under review include an integrated village for Christian pilgrims, a museum dedicated to the Baptism of Jesus, a green corridor, and infrastructure upgrades at the site.

Hassan stressed the need to begin preparations immediately, in line with directives from King Abdullah II and the initiative of the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan. He noted that the anniversary highlights Jordan’s historical and religious standing as a global destination for Christian pilgrimage and its message of coexistence, peace, love, and human fraternity.

Religious leaders on the committee include Greek Orthodox Archbishop Christophoros Atallah, Latin Patriarchal Vicar Archbishop Iyad Twal, Anglican Archbishop Hossam Naoum, and former Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan.

The government said it is mobilizing resources to reinforce Jordan’s position as a land of religious heritage.

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗘

She was born on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy. Her father was Favorino Scifi, the Count of Sasso and mother Orto Lana. Since her parents were of noble family, they wanted take St. Clare to their home, when she became a nun against their will. She refused to return to home and told her parents that God has called for her service. She was one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi. She founded an Order of Nuns named Order of Poor Ladies. The Order was renamed as Order of Saint Clare and also called as Poor Clares after the death of St. Clare, by Pope Urban-IV in the year 1263. One day some enemy soldiers came to raid the convent, where St. Clare was residing. St. Clare placed the Blessed Sacrament before the soldiers and she kneeled down to pray. Suddenly the enemy soldiers fled from the convent, due to some sudden fright struck the soldiers. The prayer of St. Clare and her faith in the Blessed Sacrament saved the nuns of the convent on that day. She died on August 11, 1253. She was canonized by Pope Alexander-IV on August 15, 1255, as St. Clare of Assisi. She is considered as the patron of sore eyes. Pope Pius-XII designated her as the patron saint of television in the year 1958.

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆𝗿

He was born in A.D. 225 in a place now in modern day Spain. He was one of the seven Deacons of ancient Rome under Pope Sixtus-II. He gave all the money he had to the poor people. When the Pope Sixtus-II was condemned to death by the Emperor Valerian and when the Pope was led to ex*****on, St. Lawrence followed the Pope. He asked the Pope "Father, where are you going without your deacon". To this the Pope answered him that "in three days you will follow me". After the death of the Pope Sixtus-II, the Prefect of Rome, who was a greedy pagan, ordered Lawrence to bring all the Church's treasures to him. Lawrence asked for three days to bring the treasures to him. He then gathered all the poor and sick people in Rome and brought them before the Prefect and told him they are the treasures of the Church. The Perfect became furious and condemned Lawrence to a slow and cruel death. He was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire. This roasted the flesh of Lawrence little by little and led him to a slow and very painful death. Tradition says that he was martyred at San Lorenzo in Panisperna on August 10, 258. Legend says that St Lawrence, while he was roasted on the iron grill told the soldiers that his flesh is now suitably roasted so that it can be eaten by them. Emperor Constantine constructed an Oratory in honor of St. Lawrence. The grill of iron of martyrdom was placed by Pope Pascal-II in the Church of St. Lorenzo in Lucina.

He is one of the widely venerated saints of Catholic Church. The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs every year in mid-August on or near San Lawrence feast day, is called by many people as the "Tears of Saint Lawrence".

Ministry is not always easy. It requires patience, sacrifice, humility, and a heart that is willing to serve even when no one notices. But every prayer you offer, every task you accomplish, every person you encourage, and every moment you give to the Church becomes a meaningful offering to God.

St. Dominic was born in 1170 in Spain. His father was Felix Guzman and mother Blessed Joan of Aza. He was named after the saint Dominic of Silos. He joined in the congregation of St. Augustine and did social work. He founded a congregation of the Order of Preachers popularly called the Dominicans (Friar Preachers). He abstained from meat and was wearing only meanest clothes. He also lived in very inconvenient and worst accommodations. He walked with barefoot in the villages. It is also believed that the Holy Mary appeared to St. Dominic and asked him to preach the Rosary throughout the world and also told him that reciting rosary is the best way to get the grace of God. Hence Rosary of Mary is the foundation of the Dominican Order. He died on August 6, 1221.

He is the patron saint of Astronomers.
