5 Things You May Not Know About the Man God Used to Reach a Generation

The more I learn about Pastor Chuck Smith and the Jesus Movement, the more I realize this wasn’t really a story about a great man.

It was a story about a great God using an ordinary man who was willing to say yes.

1. Chuck wasn’t looking for a movement.
He was simply pastoring a little church of about 25 people. Then God began sending in young people who were hurting, searching, addicted, and completely unfamiliar with church.

Chuck didn’t see a problem.

He saw a soul.

2. He chose people over appearances.
When barefoot hippies started coming to church, Chuck didn’t tell them to clean themselves up first. He opened the door.

That’s the Gospel.

Jesus doesn’t say, “Fix yourself, then come to Me.”

He says, “Come.”

3. Chuck gave them the Bible.
He didn’t believe the answer to a broken generation was simply better music or better programs.

He taught the Word of God.

And those young people became hungry for Scripture.

4. He let their gifts belong to Jesus.
Young musicians began writing and singing about Christ in the language of their generation. What came from that helped change Christian music forever.

Chuck understood something beautiful:

What God puts in your hands can become worship when you place it back in His hands.

5. He knew the glory belonged to God.

And this may be what touches me most.

Chuck understood that he didn’t create the Jesus Movement.

God did.

Chuck simply opened the door.

Maybe that’s what some of us need to hear today.

You don’t have to be famous.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.

Just be willing.

Open the door.

Love the person nobody else wants.

Teach the truth.

And let Jesus do what only Jesus can do.

Because when God decides to breathe life into something, even the smallest flame can become a fire that reaches a generation.
