ROME 155 AD

Justin Martyr wrote of how he and other early Christians attended Mass:

'This food is called among us Eucharistia [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.

For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.

For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said, โ€˜This do ye in remembrance of Me, this is My body;โ€™ and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks, He said, โ€˜This is My blood;โ€™ and gave it to them alone.โ€

This grieving girl witnessed her father travel from purgatory to heaven

During the 17th century, a grieving young girl approached Benedictine Abbot Millรกn de Mirando at the monastery of Our Lady of Montserrat. She begged the abbot to say three Masses for her deceased father.

The young girl was convinced that these Masses would speed her father on his way to heaven, releasing him from the pains of purgatory. Moved by the girl's child-like faith, the abbot said the first Mass the next day.

Suffering Soul in Purgatory

During the Mass the young girl was kneeling and as she looked up she saw her father near the altar where the priest was saying the Mass. She described her father as "kneeling, surrounded by frightening flames" and located at the bottom step of the altar. The priest was alerted to this miraculous phenomenon and he instructed the girl to place a piece of tissue where her father was kneeling. The tissue immediately started on fire for all to see, though the priest could not see the child's father. This represented her father being purified by the flames of purgatory.

A second Mass was said for the repose of her father's soul and again the little girl saw her father. This time he was up a step standing next to the deacon and was "dressed in a vibrantly colored suit." At this stage her father was still in purgatory, but no longer touched by its flames.

At the third Mass she saw her father for the last time. During the Eucharistic celebration he was "dressed in a snow-white suit," but then something extraordinary happened at the conclusion of Mass. The little girl exclaimed, "There is my father going away and rising into the sky!"

She no longer had to worry about the soul of her father as she knew with confidence that he had reached the gates of heaven.

It is a beautiful story, one that confirms for us the power of the Mass in spiritually assisting those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.

โ€œLet nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things are passing away. God never changes.โ€
โ€” St. Teresa of รvila

St. Teresa of รvila (1515โ€“1582), a Doctor of the Church from Spain, lived through many hardships, illnesses, misunderstandings, and challenges. Yet she learned something that many of us still struggle with today: everything in this world changes, but God does not.

Our circumstances can change overnight. Health can change. Relationships can change. Finances can change. Even our emotions can change from one day to the next. When we place all our peace in things that are temporary, fear and anxiety often follow. But when we place our trust in God, we stand on something that cannot be shaken.

That does not mean life will be easy. It means that no matter what happens, God remains faithful. The same God who guided the saints, carried them through suffering, and kept His promises is the same God who is with you today.

The question is: are we trusting more in our changing circumstances, or in the unchanging God who holds them all in His hands?

๐Ÿ’ฌ What is one thing in your life right now that is testing your trust in God?

Someone may need this reminder today. ๐Ÿ™

Mark 12:13-17

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Hero'di-ans, to entrap him in his talk.

And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin, and let me look at it."

And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's."

Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at him.

The Pharisees and Herodiansโ€”normally enemiesโ€”united to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus, seeing through their hypocrisy, asked for a coin and said: "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

This brilliant answer transcends politics. Everything ultimately belongs to Godโ€”our lives, talents, and very being bear His image. While we fulfill civic duties, our supreme loyalty belongs to the Lord.

When the world presents false dilemmas, Christ's wisdom shows the way. Earthly obligations and faith need not conflict when properly ordered. Ask the Lord today for wisdom to give each thing its proper place, always keeping God at the center of your decisions.

Among all the people God could have chosen to bring His Son into the world, He chose Mary.

Her role in salvation history is not accidental.

It is part of God's loving plan.

Mary always leads us closer to Jesus, never away from Him.

Here are six reasons why Mother Mary matters.

God could have chosen anyone.

Yet He chose Mary to be the Mother of His Son.

The angel Gabriel announced God's plan, and Mary was invited to cooperate in the mystery of the Incarnation.

Her unique role was given by God Himself.

To understand Mary is to better understand God's plan of salvation.

When the angel announced God's will, Mary responded:

โœ๏ธ "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word." โ€” Luke 1:38

With that humble act of faith and obedience, she welcomed the Savior into the world.

Her "yes" opened the door for the coming of Christ.

Mary teaches us the power of trusting God completely.

As Jesus hung upon the Cross, He said to the beloved disciple:

โœ๏ธ "Behold your mother." โ€” John 19:27

The Church has always seen these words as more than a personal instruction.

In giving Mary to John, Christ gave her as a spiritual mother to all His disciples.

She continues to care for the members of Christ's Body.

At the wedding feast of Cana, Mary noticed the needs of others and brought them to Jesus.

Her words remain powerful:

โœ๏ธ "Do whatever He tells you." โ€” John 2:5

Catholics ask for Mary's prayers because they trust in the communion of saints.

Her intercession always points us toward her Son.

Mary stood at the foot of the Cross and watched her Son suffer.

She experienced sorrow beyond words.

Yet she remained faithful.

She teaches us:
Trust in suffering
Perseverance in trials
Hope in God's promises
Faith in the midst of pain

Mary reminds us that suffering united with Christ can lead to glory.

Mary listened to God's Word.
Mary believed God's Word.
Mary lived God's Word.

She followed Jesus faithfully from Bethlehem to Calvary.

Her life teaches us:
โ€ข Humility
Obedience
Prayer
Trust
Faithfulness

She is the model disciple and an example for every Christian.

Mary never asks us to stop at her.

Her entire mission is to bring souls to Christ.

The more we understand her role in God's plan, the more we appreciate the greatness of the Savior she bore.

Before you scroll again, pause for one quick moment...

Pray one Hail Mary for our Catholic priests.

They have been entrusted with the Eucharist, Confession, and the care of souls. That responsibility comes with great spiritual battles. The struggles are real, the burden is heavy, and many carry it quietly.

Your prayer may be the grace that strengthens a priest today.

God often works through simple acts of love.

Pray for priests. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Many who enter the Catholic Church testify that their journey began with a deeper study of Scripture, the writings of the Early Church Fathers, and the history of Christianity.

As they explored the beliefs and practices of the earliest Christians, they discovered the roots of Catholic teachings on the Eucharist, the priesthood, apostolic succession, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the communion of saints.

At the same time, this reminds Catholics of the importance of knowing and living their faith. A strong faith is nourished through prayer, Scripture, the sacraments, and ongoing formation.

The answer to confusion is not hostility, but truth spoken with charity.

Let us continue to learn our faith, live it faithfully, and share it with love.

โœ๏ธ "Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence." โ€” 1 Peter 3:15

May we never take the gift of the Catholic faith for granted, but continually seek to know Christ and His Church more deeply.
