Watchfulness

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:15

An indefensible faith is worthless!

Many cannot defend their faith because they don’t know what to defend.

Therefore, know what you believe then you can answer why you believe!

On the other hand, you may win all arguments but if Jesus in not Lord – you will fail.

“In ancient China, the people desired security from the barbarians.

The result? The Great Wall of China.

It’s 30 feet high, 18 feet thick, and more than 2400 km long!

The goal was to build an absolutely impenetrable defense—too high to climb over, too thick to break down, and too long to go around.

But during the first 100 years of the wall’s existence, China was successfully invaded three times.

But it wasn’t the wall’s fault.

The barbarians never climbed it, broke through it, or went around it.

They didn’t have to.

All they did was bribe a gatekeeper and march through an open door.” (sermon central)

Guard your doctrines but most of all guard your hearts!

Master

“Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:17

People are confused!

There are too many voices demanding to be heard.

The foolish ones listen; reaping confusion and misery.

The wise listens only to the Lord’s voice.

Remember He is also master of all creation.

"There is not one square inch of the entire creation about which Jesus Christ does not cry out, 'This is mine! This belongs to me!'" (Abraham Kuyper)

A Christian has Jesus as Lord.

He rules our thoughts, emotions and decisions.

“A.W. Tozer says that people who are crucified with Christ have three distinct marks:

1. they are facing only one direction,

2. they can never turn back, and

3. they no longer have plans of their own.” (Tim Hansel, Holy Sweat)

This post-modern, post Christian world is one where man and his ideas rule supreme.

Obedience to Jesus, even when it does not yield the praise of men, is the best life we can ever live.

“God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him. “ (Andrew Murray.)

Firmly anchor your hearts to the master’s will.

Make Jesus Lord.

Tent

“For we know that if our earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1

Cried today!

Charlie Kirk, a 31-year old Christian activist, was shot dead in Utah Valley University.

It is now very dangerous to be an outspoken follower of Jesus in the US and all over the world.

He preached the gospel in the context of post Christian USA.

Charlie was passionate despite the insults, invectives and threats thrown at him.

‘Bernard Newman once stayed in a Bulgarian peasant’s house.

All the time he was there the daughter was stitching away at a dress.

He said to her, "Don’t you ever get tired of that eternal sewing?"

"Oh no!" she said. "You see, this is my wedding dress."

Work done for love always has a glory.’ (Barclay’s Daily Study Bible)

He died gloriously, speaking about his savior!

Charlie challenges us that the time to speak is now.

Share Jesus!

Be a courageous.

Never exchange eternity for this damaged tent.

He leaves a grieving wife and 2 children, ages 3 and 1.

Pray for them.

Pray for the US.

Debt

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” 1 Corinthians 5:14

We owe God a salvation that we could never, ever pay!

But there are simple things we can do to acknowledge His gift:

1. Become a grateful person.

2. Cultivate a life of praise and worship.

3. Growing a compassionate and generous heart.

“So often, it seems like people and even churches want grace without responsibility.

With forgiveness comes a responsibility to be forgiving.

Our response comes through the ability to confess our love to Jesus and confess our shortcomings, our flaws, and our sins…

The cancellation of our debts is pure grace that shows itself by loving others…” (Mark Eberly, sermon central)

I believe though that the greatest response to this debt is to become a witness of His grace.

Telling others about Jesus’ wonderful gift is the greatest response to God’s love.

Paul understood this; God’s love compelled him to become an apostle to the Gentiles.

Sharing Jesus is the best we can do to repay God’s love.

When was the last time you shared the gospel?

Share Jesus today.

Accounting

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10

Accountability works!

Anticipating a judgment day produces an honorable life.

Paul, in verse 11, knowing a day of reckoning, chose a life of persuading men to know Christ.

‘While standing at attention during a parade, a private began to wave in the audience.

The drill sergeant sternly warned the private, “Jones don’t ever do that again.”

A few minutes later though, the private waved again.

When the parade was over, the livid sergeant began to yell and scream at the soldier.

He pointed out the dangers of disobeying a superior.

Jones was still unremorseful.

The instructor then yelled, “Boy, aren’t you afraid of me? Don’t you know what I could do to you?”

Jones replied, “Oh yes sir, but you don’t know my mother.”’ (ministry127)

Powers and authorities will always hold us accountable for our decisions and actions in this lifetime.

But realize the highest authority will demand of us what we did with our lives.

Hopefully, we can say – we spent life sharing Jesus.

Conviction

“Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24

We should be a people of conviction; we should not fear anything that will happen.

Because God:

1. Knows all our needs. He is omniscient, knowing the deepest anxieties of our hearts, so deep that we even struggle to verbalize them.

2. Can provide all our needs. He is omnipotent, able to supply all that is required of us, not only to live or exist but to flourish as his people.

3. Fathers us. A father’s heart is love, He exists to oversee our welfare.

Nothing is ever tragic in the life of God’s children.

When something unexpected and disappointing happens in our lives – the antidote is faith in an omniscient, omnipotent and loving Father.

“Confidence, Confidence, Confidence - That is your capital.” (sermon central) Thus God instructed Joshua to be courageous as he enters a land of battle, the promised land.

Yes, there is much to fear in life but God’s sovereign hands will keep us safe.

Rest in Him. Worship Him.

See you Sunday.

Quench

“Do not quench the Spirit…” 1 Thessalonians 5:19

The greatest gift God gives a Christian is the Holy Spirit.

He has the gift of life: love, joy, peace, self-control, etc.!

Why do so few experience Him?

Because they do not know how to nurture this relationship with God’s Spirit.

‘A little boy who was flying a kite during a windy day; the kite kept going higher and higher. Finally, it got so high that it was out of sight.

A man passed by and saw the little boy holding onto the string. The man could not see the kite, and he asked the boy, “How do you even know you have a kite up there?”

The boy replied, “Because I am connected to it.”

Although we cannot see the Holy Spirit, we should be able to sense His work in our lives changing us into the image of Christ. (ministry127)

As in all relationships, intimacy is cultivated.

Prioritize spending time with God, listen through Scriptures, talk to God’s Spirit as a real person - thoroughly weave your mind and heart to Him through worship.

Quenching the Spirit means to disregard or neglect His presence in our lives.

Cultivate sensitivity to God’s Spirit.

Normal

“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

First century Christianity was tough; sufferings through persecutions was the norm.

Still… Paul exhorted them to rejoice, to be thankful.

The rest of the chapter teaches that discipleship is about being led by the Holy Spirit (v19), studying scriptures (20-21), growing in goodness and grace (21-22, 28), pursuing holiness (v23) and relying on God’s faithfulness (v24).

All these in the context of hardship.

Churches today idolize comfort, prosperity and selfish desires.

We consider that blessings are the ultimate signs of God’s favor.

And when inconvenience strikes, we believe God has abandoned us.

‘Scottish minister Alexander Whyte always found something for which to be grateful.

One Sunday morning the weather was so gloomy that one church member thought to himself, "Certainly the preacher won't think of anything for which to thank the Lord on a wretched day like this."

Much to his surprise, however, Whyte began by praying, "We thank Thee, O God, that it is not always like this."’ (Daily Bread)

What is your normal?

The normal Christian life is one of joy, thankfulness and prayer.

No matter the circumstance.

Participants

“See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15

Tragic – many Christians are spectators, not participants in God’s work.

God designed the Christian life through the church to be participative.

Christianity is not for spectators.

Each Christ follower need and minister to each other.

Our sinful nature makes us cold, worse it leads us toward hurting each other – seeking the good of another is Christlikeness.

When every believer seeks the good of another in church and where the church is located, then we would fulfill Christ’s mission and people would want to be a disciple.

The verse admonishes us to seek good rather than evil for another – this takes active participation.

‘President Kennedy at an awards banquet of the National Football Foundation, said:

"It looks as if our great national sport is no longer playing, but watching. We are becoming less and less a nation of athletes, (but) more and more a nation of spectators.”

What President Kennedy was concerned about for our nation, I'm concerned about for the church.’ (Melvin Newland)

What is your part in God’s work?

See you Sunday!
