Discipleship is the lifelong journey of following Jesus and being transformed into His likeness. It requires INTENTIONAL commitment to growth and the willingness to learn from and invest in others. It is a life-on-life approach centered on Bible study, prayer, accountability, and practical application, modeling a life that lives and obeys God.
Jesusโ call to discipleship is uncompromising. In Luke 23:9, โAnd He said to them all, if any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.โ This daily surrender confronts our tendency to compartmentalize our faith or to seek comfort above obedience. Discipleship is not a program we complete but a daily obedience to follow Jesus regardless of the cost.
Jesusโ words about bearing fruit in John 15:8 reminds us that DISCIPLESHIP produces visible results โ โHerein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.โ
This is Paulโs charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2, โAnd the things that thou hast heard of Me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.โ This is a โrelay raceโ of faith where each generation passes the baton to the next. This challenges us to think beyond our own spiritual growth to consider how we can invest in others. We train disciples to eventually disciple others also.
The goal of discipleship is clearly stated in Colossians 1:28-29: that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. This perfection is not about flawless performance but about spiritual maturity โ becoming more like Jesus in character and purpose. It is a process that requires both Divine power and human effort, grace and discipline working together. Discipleship is caught as much as taught โ โBe ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christโ (1 Cor 11:1). We need both instruction and demonstration, principles and models.
