PALM SUNDAY IN THE ANGLICAN TRADITION.

On Palm Sunday, Anglicans observe the beginning of Holy Week, remembering Jesus Christโ€™s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The day has both a celebratory and solemn tone, because it looks ahead to the events of the Passion.

Hereโ€™s what typically happens in an Anglican context:

โธป

๐ŸŒฟ 1. Blessing and Procession of Palms
โ€ข Worship often begins outside the church or at the entrance.
โ€ข The priest blesses palm branches, recalling the crowd welcoming Jesus.
โ€ข The congregation may process into the church, sometimes singing hymns like โ€œAll Glory, Laud, and Honour.โ€
โ€ข People often hold or carry palms, sometimes shaped into crosses.

โธป

๐Ÿ“– 2. Reading of the Passion
โ€ข A key feature is the reading of the Passion narrative (the story of Jesusโ€™ suffering and crucifixion).
โ€ข This is usually a longer Gospel reading, sometimes read dramatically with different voices or roles.

โธป

๐Ÿ™ 3. The Liturgy (Holy Communion)
โ€ข The service continues with the Eucharist (Holy Communion), following the structure in the Book of Common Prayer or a modern Anglican liturgy.
โ€ข Prayers reflect both praise (the entry into Jerusalem) and sorrow (the coming crucifixion).

โธป

๐ŸŽญ 4. A Shift in Tone
โ€ข The mood moves from joy (โ€œHosanna!โ€) to a more somber reflection.
โ€ข This prepares worshippers for the rest of Holy Week, especially Good Friday.

โธป

โœ๏ธ 5. Personal Devotion
โ€ข Many Anglicans keep the palm crosses and may:
โ€ข Display them at home
โ€ข Use them in prayer during the week
โ€ข Some churches collect last yearโ€™s palms to burn for ashes used on Ash Wednesday the following year.

โธป
In short:

Palm Sunday in the Anglican tradition combines celebration, scripture, and solemn reflection, marking the start of the most important week in the Christian calendar.

Palm Sunday

โœ๏ธ WHY IS RED USED ON PALM SUNDAY?

Palm Sunday begins with joy. The people welcome Jesus into Jerusalem with palms, shouting โ€œHosanna!โ€ and honoring Him as King. It feels like a moment of victoryโ€ฆ but the Church already points us to something deeper.

That is why the liturgical color is red.

Red is the color of blood, sacrifice, and martyrdom. Even as we celebrate Christโ€™s triumphal entry, the Church reminds us that His kingship will be revealed not through power, but through suffering on the Cross.

In one single liturgy, we experience both joy and sorrow. We begin with praise, yet we listen to the Passion. The same voices that cried โ€œHosannaโ€ would soon cry โ€œCrucify Him.โ€ This contrast reveals the weakness of the human heartโ€”and invites us to reflect on our own fidelity.

The red vestments quietly preach a message:
Christโ€™s victory comes through sacrifice.

Palm Sunday is not just about waving palms. It is an invitation to follow Jesus beyond moments of joyโ€”into sacrifice, obedience, and love. Because the path to resurrection always passes through the Cross.

As we enter Holy Week, the Church calls us to remain with Himโ€”not only in celebration, but also in suffering.

โœ๏ธDo you follow Christ only when it is easyโ€ฆ or also when it costs you something?

WHY ANGLICANS BAPTIZE CHILDREN AND ADULTS.

The Anglican Church practices baptism for both infants (young children) and adults because of its theological roots and understanding of what baptism means.

1. Baptism as a sign of Godโ€™s grace

Anglicans believe baptism is a sacramentโ€”an outward sign of inward spiritual grace. Itโ€™s not just about a personโ€™s decision; itโ€™s also about God welcoming someone into the Christian community.
โ€ข For infants, baptism shows that Godโ€™s love and grace come before we can choose or understand.
โ€ข For adults, baptism reflects a personal decision of faith.

2. Biblical and early church tradition

The Anglican tradition follows both:
โ€ข The teachings of the Bible (including whole households being baptized in the New Testament)
โ€ข The practices of the early Christian church, which baptized both adults and children

3. Covenant and community

Anglicans see the church as a family or covenant community, similar to how children in ancient Israel were included in Godโ€™s covenant.
โ€ข When a baby is baptized, parents and godparents make promises to raise the child in the faith.
โ€ข Later, the child can personally affirm those promises in a rite called confirmation.

4. Adult baptism is still important

Adult baptism is common when someone:
โ€ข Converts to Christianity
โ€ข Was not baptized as a child

In those cases, the person makes their own confession of faith at baptism.

โธป

In short

Anglicans baptize both because they hold two truths together:
โ€ข Godโ€™s grace is given freely (so infants can be baptized)
โ€ข Personal faith matters (so adults are baptized when they believe)

IS BAPTISM REQUIRED? Converting from the Roman Catholic Church to the Anglican Church?

Short answer: Noโ€”Anglican Church do not re-baptize someone coming from the Roman Catholic Church.

Why not?

The Anglican Church recognizes Roman Catholic baptisms as valid, as long as they were done:
โ€ข with water
โ€ข in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Because of that, a person who was baptized Catholic is already considered baptized in the Christian sense.

โธป

What happens instead?

If a Catholic wants to become Anglican, they are usually:
โ€ข Received into the church (a formal welcome), and/or
โ€ข Confirmed by a bishop (a ceremony affirming their faith)

โธป

When would baptism happen?

Baptism would only happen if:
โ€ข The person was never baptized, or
โ€ข There is serious doubt about whether the original baptism was valid

โธป

Bottom line
โ€ข Catholic โ†’ Anglican: no second baptism
โ€ข They recognize each otherโ€™s baptisms as part of the same Christian tradition
