What Does the Bible Say About It?
In many churches today, it’s noticeable that after the morning worship, a number of young people no longer return for the afternoon AY (Adventist Youth) program. This is not just about attendance—it reflects a deeper spiritual condition.
1. A Heart Issue, Not Just a Schedule Issue
The Bible reminds us in Matthew 6:21:"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
If young people find more excitement in rest, gadgets, or social media than in spiritual fellowship, it shows where their interest is being drawn. It’s not that they are too busy—it’s that something else has captured their attention.
2. Lack of Spiritual Hunger
In Amos 8:11, it speaks of a “famine… of hearing the words of the Lord.”
Many youth today are spiritually hungry—but they try to fill that hunger with worldly entertainment instead of God’s Word. When spiritual activities feel “optional,” it often means the soul is no longer craving heavenly things.
3. Programs May Lack Connection
Let’s be real—sometimes AY programs fail to connect with the youth. If it feels repetitive, unengaging, or disconnected from real-life struggles, attendance drops.
But this is also a shared responsibility:
Leaders must make programs meaningful and Christ-centered
Youth must come not just to be entertained, but to grow spiritually
As counseled by Ellen G. White:
“With such an army of workers as our youth… might furnish, how soon the message… might be carried to the whole world.”
This shows that youth are not just attendees—they are missionaries in training.
4. Influence of the World
In Romans 12:2:"Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Today’s culture promotes comfort, convenience, and self-centered living. Returning for AY requires sacrifice—time, effort, and intention. Without strong spiritual grounding, it’s easy to follow the easier path.
5. The Call to Fellowship
The Bible clearly encourages gathering together in Hebrews 10:25:"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… but exhorting one another."
AY is not just a program—it’s a place for:
Encouragement
Growth
Mission training
Spiritual bonding
Skipping it means missing opportunities to strengthen faith.
The issue is not just “Why are youth not coming back?”The deeper question is:
“What is drawing their hearts away—and how can we lead them back to Christ?”
Because when the heart is truly connected to God, attendance is no longer forced—it becomes a desire.
