Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a young Spanish soldier who dreamed of glory, honor, and fame. In 1521, during a battle, a cannonball shattered one of his legs. While recovering in bed for many months, he asked for books about knights and heroic adventures. Instead, he was given only two books: the life of Jesus Christ and the lives of the saints.
As he read them, he noticed something important. Dreams of becoming a famous soldier brought only temporary excitement, but thinking about following Christ filled him with lasting peace and joy. That experience changed his heart.
After recovering, Ignatius laid down his sword before an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and dedicated his life to serving Jesus. He later founded the Society of Jesus, known as the Jesuits, whose mission is to serve the Church through education, missionary work, and the Spiritual Exercises.
Saint Ignatius teaches us that God can use even our wounds and failures to lead us to a greater purpose. His famous prayer expresses his complete trust in God: “Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will.”
