FEATURE OF THE WEEK: The Coat of Arms and Seal of Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Bagac, Bataan

As we will celebrate the Feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria this coming November 25, we are featuring this week a coat of arms and seal of the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Catherine of Alexandria Bagac, Bataan. They will also celebrate their Anniversary of the Declaration as a Diocesan Shrine on November 16.

The Symbols of St. Catherine of Alexandria– The symbols at the chief point of the shield refer to the titular patroness of the parish and shrine of Bagac, St. Catherine of Alexandria. The spiked wheel and the sword are connected to the story of the virgin’s martyrdom. The furious Roman emperor Maxentius condemned Catherine to death on a spiked breaking wheel, but, at her touch, it shattered. Maxentius ordered her to be beheaded. Catherine herself ordered the ex*****on to commence.
A milk-like substance rather than blood flowed from her neck. The Gules (red) background represents the blood of the martyrs, which is called by the early Christian Church Father Tertullian as the “seed of the Church”. The palm leaves that function as the supporters of the shield are symbols of the martyrdom of the saint. The waving of palm branches and even laying them on the ground was a sign of a hero's welcome.

The Parish Youth Ministry of the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the whole Shrine Community celebrates the Episcopal ordination of the new Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, His Excellency Archbishop Julien Kaboré.
