23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:

Matthew 18:15-20

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there, among them."

REFLECT:

When I was a child, the worst name you could be called was "tattletale." Once you were branded with that name, it was hard to find anyone to play with. Prophets often had the same problem. Because they told people truths that they didn't want to hear, they --- along with their messages --- were often rejected. But there is a big difference between tattletales and prophets. Tattletales are trying to get others into trouble. Prophets are trying to keep people out of trouble by calling them to turn to the Lord. Prophets lovingly speak the truth that God has put on their hearts.

Jesus gives a similar task to the Church. He asks its leaders and members to speak the truth in love to everyone they meet, gently calling people to turn to the Lord who loves them.

22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:

Matthew 16:21-27

"For whoever chooses to save his life will lose it, but the one who loses his life, for My sake, will find it."

REFLECT:

For the most part, people seek pleasure and try to avoid pain. But Jesus reminds us that suffering will always be part of a disciple's life. Our goal as disciples is to become more and more like our Teacher. So we too take up our cross each day, dying to our selfish desires and pouring out our lives in love of God and neighbor. Our cross may be small: being patient with a tiresome colleague, lending a listening ear to someone who is lonely, extending a helping hand when needed. But if we follow Jesus in carrying the cross, we will follow Him to heaven as well.

21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:

Matthew 16:13-20

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."

REFLECT:

Who do you say that Jesus is? How do we think about our relationship with Jesus? Some people see Jesus as a just judge, others as a wise teacher. Some people hope to find a great ruler, others a gentle shepherd. Some are drawn to His miracles, others to His gentleness and compassion. Jesus is all these things and more. He is God-with-us, who through His death and Resurrection destroyed the bonds of death forever and opened the gates of heaven. Jesus' loving care for us is beyond our imagination and understanding. We are called to stay close to Him, drawing nearer every day until at last we see Him face to face.

20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:

Matthew 15:21-28

"Lord, Son of David, have pity on me!"

REFLECT:

James Joyce described the Catholic Church as "Here comes everyone." He might have been inspired by today's readings. The Church is a welcoming mother, ready to receive anyone who wishes to come to God, without regard to age, class, race, or ethnicity. There is room for everyone in God's house of prayer.

As members of His Church, we extend God's hospitality and welcome to those searching for a place where they feel like they belong. Jesus calls each of us to reach out to those on the margins, bringing them to the center, to the very heart of God.

19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel:

Matthew 14:22-33

"Truly, You are the Son of God!"

REFLECT:

When I was small, I prayed this prayer at bedtime each night:

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, look upon this little child.

Unfortunately, as we grow older, we all too often forget Jesus' gentleness and meekness. Like the people of his own day, we look for a great warrior that we can be proud to follow, rather than a humble savior who served. Today's readings remind us of God's gentleness. God does not come in wind and fire, but in a murmur. Though He commands the waves, the most striking image in the Gospel is Jesus reaching out to take hold of Peter. In His gentleness and loving care, God shows us His glory. If we wish to follow Him, gentleness will mark our path.

TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9

"This is my Son, the Beloved, my Chosen One. Listen to Him."

REFLECT:

On August 6, 1945, our world was transformed when the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The moment has had a long-lasting effect on our world, making it seem more fragile and its safety more tenuous. Jesus' Transfiguration is an antidote to the disfiguring that humans do to the world because of our sinfulness. If we listen to Jesus, God's Chosen One, and discern God's will for us. We can remove that sin from our lives. We can help to replace destruction with the kingdom God wishes us to create. We can learn to appreciate and value the people and the world that God has made, treating them with love and care.

17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52

"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure, hidden in a field."

REFLECT:

What matters to you? What do you value? What is your treasure, your pearl of great price? Does the way you live show that these are the things you value? If you want to know what you value, don't look at your words or intentions, but at your budget and your daily schedule. If you say that your faith and family are your treasures, look to see if you have blocked out time for daily prayer and Sunday Mass, time for family meals, along with projects, reading, and games. If you value justice and charity, does your budget show generous stewardship and an effort to live simply? The way you spend your time, money, and energy shows what really matters to you.

16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 13:24-43

"Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time."

REFLECT:

In His public ministry, Jesus often spoke of the kingdom of God, typically using parables to make His point. He had to use parables because the kingdom of God is so far beyond our human capacity to understand. God's kingdom is not what we expect. It is the very embodiment of God's love, justice, and mercy. It is much more that we can imagine.

The kingdom of God gives each of us a chance to grow closer to God. Until the moment of our death, God will keep calling us back to Him, hoping that we will return to His loving arms. His mercy is always available. All we need to do is to ask for His forgiveness. Like the yeast that leavens the dough or the mustard seed, His forgiveness is expansive and able to welcome all who draw near.

15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23

"For the one who has will be given more; and he will have in abundance."

REFLECT:

The Parable of the Sower can act as an examination of conscience. As we read this parable, we can reflect on the things that keep us from allowing the Word of God to bear fruit in our lives. Do we fail to take the Word of God seriously, ignoring what our consciences tell us and what the Church teaches? Is our faith shallow so that we are easily dissuaded from living as we claim to believe? Is our faith threatened by anxiety, greed, or other distractions? How can we become good soil to receive God's Word? We can prepare our hearts by spending time in prayer, listening for the Lord's voice. We can make our spirits docile to God's will. We can ask God in His mercy to cleanse us of the sins that keep us from Him.

14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

REFLECT:

Sometimes I need to be reminded that I'm a human being, not a human doing. My value depends not on what I achieve or accomplish, but in the fact that I am a beloved child of God whose Spirit dwells within.

Unfortunately, the world judges differently, valuing those who are the most productive, great achievers, or those who garner wealth. Time spent enjoying life, praying, caring for family, or just relaxing is considered wasted time.

Those who do not produce --- the elderly, the disabled, the unborn --- are treated as though they have no value. They can be discarded. But followers of Jesus value these people all the more, for Jesus has chosen them as His own.

13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42

"And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones, because he is my disciple, I assure you, he will not go unrewarded."

REFLECT:

Today's Gospel is shocking! Jesus says quite plainly that we must love God more than any human being, even our parents and children! This instruction seems outrageous, especially since honoring our parents is one of the commandments. But Jesus does not tell us not to love our parents and children. Rather, we must love God first. If we love God wholeheartedly, our love will be multiplied and will overflow. We will have enough love for family, friends, strangers, and even enemies. Jesus teaches that we cannot limit our love to those close to us and most like us. Our love should expand beyond what is comfortable and reach out to the margins, to those despised, ignored, and forgotten.

11th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Gospel: Matthew 9:36-10:8

"Freely have you received, freely give."

REFLECT:

Time and again in the Scriptures reminds us that God is always with us, ready to give us everything that we need. When the people of Israel were slaves in Egypt, He gave them freedom and guided their journey to the land He had prepared for them. He made them His people and gave them His commandments to help them stay close to Him.

When Jesus saw that the people were like sheep without a shepherd, He sent the Twelve out to bring healing and hope to those who were wandering. And when our sins condemned us to everlasting death, God send His Son to break the bonds of death and lead us to everlasting life. God always wants what is best for us. He waits with outstretched arms for us to come to Him.
