A Talking Donkey (Numbers 22:21–35)
This story centers on Balaam, a prophet who was asked by a king to curse the Israelites. Even though Balaam seemed willing to go, God was not pleased with his intentions.
As Balaam traveled on his donkey, something strange kept happening—the donkey would suddenly stop, turn aside, or even lie down.
Balaam became frustrated and struck the animal multiple times, thinking it was just being stubborn.
But what Balaam didn’t realize was that the donkey could see an angel of the Lord standing in the path with a drawn sword, blocking the way. Balaam couldn’t see it—but the donkey could, and it was actually trying to protect him.
Then comes the surprising moment:
God allowed the donkey to speak.
The donkey questioned Balaam, basically asking why it was being beaten when it had always been loyal. Instead of being shocked at first, Balaam argued back—showing just how blinded he was by anger.
After that, God opened Balaam’s eyes, and he finally saw the angel. He realized that the donkey had saved his life, because the angel would have struck him down if he had continued on the wrong path.
Why this story stands out:
It shows that God can use anything—even a donkey—to deliver a message.
The donkey had clearer spiritual awareness than Balaam in that moment.
It’s a reminder that sometimes we don’t see what’s really going on, even when it’s right in front of us.
It’s one of the most unusual and memorable moments in the Bible—not just because an animal talked, but because of the deeper lesson behind it.
