Happy Lord's Day!
The fourth commandment reminds us that the Sabbath is not a burden, inconvenience, or waste of time. It is one of God’s gracious gifts to His people. In a busy and exhausted world, where life is often shaped by work, pressure, bills, ambition, and endless responsibilities, God calls us to stop, rest, and worship Him.
The Sabbath is first rooted in creation. God Himself worked for six days and rested on the seventh, establishing a rhythm for human life: work and rest. We were not created to live like machines. We were made to rest in God and acknowledge that our lives do not depend on our endless labor.
The Sabbath is also grounded in redemption. Israel was once enslaved in Egypt, but God delivered them. Likewise, the Lord’s Day reminds us that we are no longer slaves—to work, money, fear, expectations, or performance. In Christ, we are free to rest and worship.
Most of all, the Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus secured the true and eternal rest of God’s people. That is why Christians gather on the Lord’s Day, rejoicing not in our works but in Christ’s finished work.
The Lord’s Day is not God taking time from us. It is God giving Himself to us.
