MAY 24 | THE SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

The Solemnity of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter. It is the feast on which we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit that overturns the confusion of Babel (see Gn. 11:9). In Jesus, who died, rose and ascended into Heaven, the peoples once again understand each other through one sole language, the language of love.

During the first half of the 3rd century, Tertullian and Origen were already speaking of Pentecost as a Feast that followed the Ascension. As the pilgrim Egeria attests, Pentecost was a Feast that was already celebrated in Jerusalem in the 4th century. It proposed the theme of the renewal that the coming of the Spirit works in the hearts of men and women.

Pentecost has its roots in the Feast of Weeks celebrated by the Jewish people. This was an annual agricultural festival surrounding the first fruits of the spring harvest and celebrated the yearโ€™s harvest. Later, it was connected with the revelation of God to Moses, the Ten Commandments. Then, for Christians, it would become the moment in which Christ, having returned to the glory of the Father, would make himself present in the hearts of men and women through His Spirit, the law given by God written in their hearts: โ€œThe new and definitive Covenant is no longer founded on a law that is written on two stone tablets, but on the action of the Spirit of God which makes all things new and is etched on hearts of fleshโ€ (Pope Francis, General Audience, 19 June 2019). With Pentecost, the Church was born and her evangelizing mission began.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, โ€œPeace be with you.โ€ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, โ€œPeace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.โ€ And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, โ€œReceive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.โ€

PRAYER ๐Ÿ™

Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!
Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.
You, of comforters the best;
You, the soulโ€™s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;
In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!
Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend:
Give them virtueโ€™s sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end.

As we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and the Sixtieth World Communications Sunday 2026, the Diocese of Dumaguete SocCom stands united in the mission of bringing Christ to the world through the gift of communication.

The Gospel of Matthew reminds us that before Jesus ascended into heaven, He entrusted His disciples with a mission - to proclaim the Good News to all nations. Today, that mission continues through every camera, every story, every livestream, every post, and every message that spreads truth, hope, faith, and love.

Communication is not only about technology; it is about witnessing Christ in the modern world. As Jesus ascended, He did not leave us alone - He sent us to continue His mission with courage and faith.

May every communicator become a voice of truth, an instrument of peace, and a light that leads people closer to God.

Thank you also to out BACONG PARISH SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS TEAM! โ™ฅ๏ธ

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord commemorates Jesusโ€™ ascension into Heaven.

St. Augustine first points us to reflect on the Ascension with the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Colossians (Col. 3:1-4):

Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle:

If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth.

For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.

MAY 13 | FEAST OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA โ˜€๏ธ

The story begins in the village of Fatima, Portugal, on May 13, 1917. On that fateful day near that tiny village, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, appeared to three young peasant children: Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia; ages 10, 9 and 7. As was the custom, these youngsters were tending their familyโ€™s sheep when โ€œa Lady all in white, more brilliant than the sunโ€ฆ indescribably beautiful,โ€ standing above a bush, appeared to the youngsters.

From May through October 1917, the Lady appeared and spoke to the children on the 13th day of each month.

News of these apparitions began to spread throughout the region. The children recounted that the Virgin told them that God had sent her with a message for every man, woman, and child living in the century. She promised that God would grant peace to the entire world if Her requests for prayer, reparation and consecration were heard and obeyed. While many people believed the children had actually seen the Virgin, many others discounted the childrenโ€™s story, subjecting them to much derision and ridicule. When it became known the Lady would visit the children for the last time on October 13, 1917, and had promised a sign that would convince the world she had appeared, many pilgrims made plans to attend.

Though the region had been subjected to three days of torrential downpour, nearly 70,000 people journeyed through the heavy rain and mud to the place of the previous apparitions to witness the predicted miracle. Many were scornful, unbelievers whose sole intent was to discredit the childrenโ€™s stories.

Suddenly the โ€œclouds separatedโ€ฆand the sun appeared between them in the clear blue, like a disk of white fire.โ€ The people could look at the sun without blinking and while they gazed upward, the huge ball began to โ€œdanceโ€. The huge fireball whirled rapidly with dizzy and sickening speed, flinging out all sorts of brilliant colors that reflected on the faces of the crowds. The fiery ball continued to gyrate in this manner three times, then seemed to tremble and shudder, and plunge in a mighty zigzag course toward the earth. The crowd was terrified, fearing this was the end of the world.

However, the sun reversed course and, retracing its zigzagging course, returned to its normal place in the heavens. All of this transpired in approximately ten minutes. After realizing they were not doomed, the crowd began ecstatically laughing, crying, shouting and weeping. Many discovered their previously drenched clothing to be perfectly dry.

After what has become to be known as โ€œThe Miracle of the Sun,โ€ the children were grilled many, many times, about what they had seen and been told. Their story never changed. The heart of Our Ladyโ€™s message to the world is contained in what has become known as the โ€œSecret,โ€ which she confided to the children in July 1917. The โ€œSecretโ€ actually consists of three parts. The first part of the โ€œSecretโ€ was a frightening vision of hell, โ€œwhere the souls of poor sinners go,โ€ and contained an urgent plea from Our Lady for acts of prayer and sacrifice to save souls, with particular emphasis on praying of the rosary and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The second part of the โ€œSecretโ€ specifically prophesied the outbreak of World War II and contained the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communistsโ€™ totalitarianism.

The third part was not revealed until 2000. Its revelation coincided with the beatification of Francisco and Jacinta. It did not contain any striking or cataclysmic prediction, but, instead, the vision supported and affirmed the immense suffering endured by witnesses of the faith in the last century of the second millennium. Sister Lucia, the surviving member of the Fatima trio, confirmed that in the vision โ€œthe Bishop clothed in white,โ€ who prays for all the faithful, is the Pope. As he makes his way with great difficulty towards the Cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred (bishops, priests, men and women religious and many lay people), he too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a hail of gunfire. It is possible that the vision predicted the 1981 attack on Pope John Paul IIโ€™s life. The Pope has always credited the Virgin for his survival. Or it may be a portrayal of the Churchโ€™s continued struggle against secularism and anti-Christian movements and a continuing call to prayer, sacrifice and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA, PRAY FOR US!

In times when corruption, greed, and dishonesty continue to wound our nation, many Filipinos are losing trust in those who were chosen to serve. Yet amid frustration and uncertainty, we turn to the Blessed Mother for guidance and hope.

May Our Lady of Fatima intercede for the Philippines โ€” that truth may overcome deception, justice may prevail over corruption, and public servants may remember that leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us! ๐Ÿ™
