FOR THE GOOD OF OTHERS

2 Corinthians 8:9

“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”

REFLECTION:
Born into a noble family, Domingo de Guzmán (1170-1221), founder of the Dominicans, was known for self-sacrifice and caring for others. As a teenager, Domingo was an excellent scholar, and his books were prized possessions. Even so, he had a greater love: caring for the needy.

Domingo believed that others would know love "by an example of humility and other virtues far more readily than by any external display or verbal battles." So the priest from a prestigious family chose to live the life of poverty. He began by traveling barefoot and refusing to sleep on a bed in favor of the ground. He accepted discomfort as an opportunity to praise God.
Domingo sacrificed material treasures because he knew human lives were worth more than his possessions. He sacrificed status because he knew showing love to others was more important than being applauded. Humility allowed him to see a greater good and act on it.

Setting an example of humility is a way of loving others. Jesus Himself set as an example for us in love when He said in John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Being humble might mean sacrificing money, a promotion, or our culture's most prized possession—time. When we understand that all good things are gifts from God (James 1:17), we are free to give them up for the good of others.

YOUR LIFE IS YOUR TIME

Ephesians 5:14-17

"Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is."

REFLECTION:
Our lives are governed by time. That's why we're surrounded by clocks and calendars that dictate our activities. As the minutes tick by, we wonder where the day went. When responsibilities and pressures mount, we complain, "I just don't have time to get it all done!" But the reality is that God has given us enough time to do exactly what He's planned for our lives. Perhaps the bigger issue is whether we are using our time to do our will or the Lord's.

Time is a gift from God, and He has allotted each of us a measure in which to live and accomplish His purposes. We have only two options—to spend it temporally on our own interests or invest it eternally. Since time can never be retrieved or reversed, it's critical that we make the most of every opportunity the Lord provides.

The key to investing in eternity is following God's plan for your life, not just filling your days with activities. Jesus was allocated just thirty-three years of life on earth, but only the last three were spent in fulfilling His Messianic ministry. To us that seems like a waste of time. Yet Christ accomplished everything His Father gave Him to do. That's why on the cross He could say, "It is finished" (John 19:30).

Scripture compares earthly life to "a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14), but eternal life never ends. It's foolish to spend your life on a v***r when you can reap everlasting benefits by following God's will for your time here. Each day is an opportunity to choose.

A NECESSARY BUT CHALLENGING LESSON

Psalm 27:14

"Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord."

REFLECTION:
Believers must learn to wait upon Him.
Have you ever wondered why the psalmist coupled the admonition to wait upon God with encouragement to be strong and courageous? The reason is that sometimes delaying is the hardest thing to do.
Modern culture is in such a hurry. Gotta have it now! Gotta do it now! Can't wait! We've been primed to stay in a permanent state of readiness. It takes courage to be still when the world is rushing past. Everything in us hollers, "Go!" while God whispers, "Wait." But people are quick to act, because they are afraid of missing out on something. Believers who buy into that attitude make a move and then hope God will bless them.

God leaves nothing to chance. He does not place a decision before us with the hope that we'll make the right choice. That would be irresponsible and out of character. The Father is more than willing to show His children what to do, because He is personally interested in their welfare. But until the Lord makes clear what is the way forward, we've got to pause and wait.

Waiting upon God requires patience and trust. His answer is always on time. It's worth waiting!

DRIVEN PERSONALITIES

Read: Proverbs 18

"..Death and life are in the power of the tongue..." (v.21)

REFLECTION:
Don't think that your words will be overlooked and easily erased. I can remember the words of a teacher who made me stand up in a crowded classroom and said something that pierced my heart, leaving a deep scar. The hurt has gone now and forgiveness had dealt with the residual effects, but the memory burned within me for years. Any counselor will tell you how unkind and cruel words spoken to a child in its early years have shaped and molded his life for good or for bad. A minister tells of talking to a forty-two-year-old man who was frantically working himself into exhaustion - "a volatile human being whose temper exploded at the slightest hint of disagreement or criticism." He found that during childhood this man's father repeatedly told him: "You are not going to amount to anything." Every time his father lost his temper, he would repeat this statement to the boy. Thirty years later the man still bore the pain of his father's verbal malpractice and was driven to prove his father wrong. This is what psychologists are talking about when they refer to people who are driven. They are driven by the lash of cruel words to them years earlier. Bible said in James 3:8 "But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."

Take, on the other hand, this example of another man. He told me that his father used to hug him every day and say: "You are so special to me. There is no one in the world who could take your place." That man grew up with aliveness and optimism in his personality. Proverbs is right: death words destroy, life words build up and give increasing strength. Paul said in Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."

ONE TRUE AND LIVING GOD

Exodus 20:2-3

"I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bo***ge. Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

REFLECTION:
The doctrinal affirmations today and tomorrow will help you renew your mind and take your stand on the truth. I recommend that you read these Scriptural affirmations aloud at least once a week in the coming year.

I recognize that there is only one true and living God (Exodus 20:2, 3), who exists as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that He is worthy of all honor, praise and worship as the Creator, Sustainer, Beginning and End of all things (Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10; Isaiah 43:1, 7, 21).

I recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1, 14). I believe that He came to destroy the works of Satan (1 John 3:8), that He disarmed the rulers and authorities, having triumphed over them (Colossians 2:15).

I believe that God has proven His love for me, because when I was still a sinner, Christ died for me (Romans 5:8). I believe that He delivered me from the domain of darkness and transferred me to His kingdom, and in Him I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:13, 14).

I believe that I am now a child of God (1 John 3:1-3). I believe that I was saved by the grace of God through faith, that it was a gift and not the result of any works on my part (Ephesians 2:8).

I choose to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might (Ephesians 6:10). I put no confidence in the flesh (Philippians 3:3), for the weapons of my warfare are not of the flesh (2 Corinthians 10:4). I put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17), and I resolve to stand firm in my faith and resist the evil one.

TRADING GOD FOR GLORY

Luke 24:44

“And He (Jesus) said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.”

REFLECTION:
In Christophany, Moses was saved by grace through faith in Jesus—fifteen hundred years before Jesus was born (John 8:58). Does that mean that Moses lived a perfect life? Reading through his life story, we’ll see Moses stumble and fall. We’ll see him try to accomplish God’s will in his own strength—and he will fail miserably. He will try to take God’s purposes into his own hands—and he’ll make a complete mess of things. God will have to tear Moses down, then build him up again before Moses can be a true instrument of God.

Yet through it all, Moses stood firm on his decision to give up the world’s gold for God’s glory. That decision, made in the presence of God at the burning bush, will sustain him, keep him focused, and empower him so that God can use him in a mighty way as Israel’s deliverer and lawgiver.

I once heard someone say, “If it’s a contest between Egypt and Moses, pity Moses. But if it’s a contest between Egypt and God, pity Egypt.” God promises that the moment you turn your back on this world’s gold in order to pursue God’s glory, He will accomplish great things through you. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
The apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

Trading gold for God's glory produces incalculable rewards.

CREATED TO PRAISE

Psalm 148:1-5

1. Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
2. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
3. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
4. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
5. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created."

REFLECTION:
How do God’s created things praise Him?
Imagine that you are attending an art show. You come across a series of pieces that are outstanding. They are creative and beautiful and diverse and detailed. They are masterpieces. True works of art! It’s only natural that you’d start looking around for a name plate with the artist’s name and information listed. After all, once you’ve seen the work of their hands, it’s only natural to wonder about their creator. These pieces are a testament of the talent and genius of the artist.

But I bet you have never come across a piece of artwork and assumed that it created itself. In fact, I bet you’ve never come across anything in the world that you think just randomly came into existence.

This idea, when applied to our world and the universe, is called “The Cosmological Argument.” It states that everything that has a beginning must have been created by something else. The argument goes like this:
The universe has a beginning, it is not eternal.
Everything that has a beginning was created by someone or something else. Things do not randomly make themselves.

Given that, the universe had to be created by something or someone. (We know that Someone to be God). Now, some people like to try to use the Cosmological Argument against Christians by questioning who or what created God. But the Cosmological Argument does not claim that everything has a cause, only that things that have a beginning have a cause. God does not have a beginning. He is eternal.

The author of Hebrews 3:4 put it this way: “For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.” It is completely illogical to believe that the universe, or anything in it, created itself. That is just not how the world works and we know that. The universe could not create itself but God could create the universe because He is outside of space and time (in fact, He created the concepts of space and time). In the beginning was nothing except God (Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1).

So when we consider nature, what should our response be? Worship. “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
(Revelation 4:11).

OUR CARING AND ABLE FATHER

2 Chronicles 20:1-4

1. It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
2. Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.
3. And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
4. And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the Lord: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

REFLECTION:
Everyone faces challenges in life. Whether our struggles are financial, vocational, relational, or physical, we can be certain that nobody is exempt. Fortunately, we serve a God who is both interested in our problems and able to take care of them.

When trouble looms, prayer is always a good first step to take. But having a foundation upon which to build our prayers also makes a difference. Jehoshaphat, the King of Judah, faced an enormous challenge. Three different tribes--the Moabites, Amonites, and Meunites--simultaneously waged war against him. Most leaders would have crumbled under such pressure, or at the very least taken drastic measures, but Jehoshaphat was a wise king. Though afraid, he did not strike out against his enemies.Instead, knowing that God was interested in his dilemma, he "turned his attention to seek the Lord" and proclaimed a fast throughout the land (2 Chron. 20:1-3).

Jehoshaphat also knew that God, who was greater than any earthly problem, had done miraculous things for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and Daniel. That same God would help him, too, in his hour of need.

We should never underestimate the Lord's interest in our affairs. He helped our ancestors in the Bible, and He can and will help His children today (Joshua 1:1-9). It's easy to think our problems are unimportant in the eyes of God, but He doesn't feel that way at all. Whatever concerns us concerns Him. If we, like Jehoshaphat, turn right to God and proclaim His power, He will intervene. And no matter how great our challenges are, God is greater.

THE BELIEVER'S PURPOSE

Galatians 5:13

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

REFLECTION:
God has a purpose for your life. If that weren't true, He'd have taken you home to heaven at the moment of salvation. Do you ever wonder why He left you here?

The Lord intends to influence others through you. Our purpose is to be a vessel through which Christ overflows to others--touching those who hurt and desperately need a Savior. Once we are saved, Scripture teaches, our involvement is threefold.

First, we love others. Jesus clearly stated that this was one of the two greatest commandments (Matt. 22:38-39).

Second, we share the good news of salvation (Acts 1:8). Some travel across the world to spread the gospel, while others teach neighbors across the street. The Holy Spirit will direct us to the right people if we are willing to obey.

Third, we serve in a variety of ways, like helping those in need, sharing our resources, and lifting others in prayer.

Jesus is our perfect example of all three. His entire life was marked by caring for people--both those who loved Him and those who did not. In fact, the Bible teaches that He humbled Himself and became like us, willing to give up His life for our redemption. There is no greater love; there is no greater act of service.

Scripture clearly defines the believer's purpose. Aligning ourselves with God's intentions for His children--loving others, witnessing, and serving-- bring us great satisfaction. In fact, we're still on earth not merely to hear more teaching but to act on it and share with others what we learn.

REAL HOPE

Colossians 1:5-6

"For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:"

REFLECTION:
How is the hope of the Gospel different from worldly hope?

Is hope just wishful thinking? Well, that depends on what you are placing your hope in. Some people place their hope in things that are not worthy. They hope for things to turn out ok but they don’t have any real basis for that belief. They just hope against hope.

But in Christ, our hope is not just wishful thinking. In today’s verse, Paul says that our hope is “laid up for you in heaven". Notice that he doesn’t say He wants our hope to be laid up for us in heaven. He doesn’t say He is pretty sure it's there. He is confident. He is sure. Our hope isn’t eventually going to be there for us. He said that our hope is already stored up for us in heaven.
What is this hope? Paul went on to write that they had already heard of this hope when they heard the Gospel. The Gospel message is our basis for our hope. Later, in verse 27, Paul wrote that Christ in us is “the hope of glory.” If we have accepted Jesus Christ, we are assured that a future glory awaits us.

In Romans 8:18-25, Paul wrote: “(18) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (19) For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. (20) For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope. (21) Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bo***ge of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. (22) For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. (23) And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. (24) For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (25.) But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."

Friends, the message of the Gospel gives us an assurance of hope. In Christ, we have a future glory stored up in heaven for us. We may be suffering now but it can’t compare to the glory that is secured for us because we have been adopted through Christ. We are now children of God! And this hope has been yours “since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth.” If you have heard the Gospel, understood God’s grace through faith, and accepted the Gospel as the truth of God, you have the hope of future glory set aside for you.

You don’t have to wish for it. You don’t have to cross your fingers. You have a reason for your hope and it’s a sure thing. That reason is Jesus Christ.
