The Bible speaks of salvation in three tenses. This does not mean there are three different salvations. Rather, it describes one salvation experienced in three stages.

1. Past Tense — “I HAVE BEEN SAVED” (Justification)

Key Verse: Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 5:1

“For by grace you have been saved through faith…” (Ephesians 2:8)

What it means:

At the moment a person trusts in Christ, God:

* Forgives all his sins.
* Declares him righteous (justification).
* Adopts him into His family.

The penalty of sin has been removed.

Question answered: What have I been saved from?

The penalty of sin.

2. Present Tense — “I AM BEING SAVED” (Sanctification)

Key Verses: Philippians 2:12–13; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 2 Corinthians 3:18

“…to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)

What it means:

Although believers are already justified, God continues His work of transforming them to become more like Christ through the Holy Spirit.

This is lifelong growth in holiness.

The power of sin is progressively being broken.

Question answered: What am I being saved from?

The power (dominion) of sin.

3. Future Tense — “I WILL BE SAVED” (Glorification)

Key Verses: Romans 5:9–10; Romans 13:11; 1 Peter 1:5

“…our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11)

What it means:

When Christ returns or when believers enter His presence, salvation will reach its completion.

Believers will:

* Receive glorified bodies.
* Be perfectly holy.
* Live forever with Christ.

The presence of sin will be removed forever.

Question answered: What will I be saved from?
