Todayโs Gospel talks about Jesus walking on water and Peter almost drowning because he doubted. I like the reflection that our priest shared in his homily: that we can learn two things from this momentโfocusing and standing firm.
As a child, I thought Peter almost drowned simply because he had little faith. But after hearing this today, I came to realize that perhaps it was not that Peter did not have faith in Jesus. After all, he had enough faith to step out of the boat and walk toward Him. Perhaps, instead, Peter became distracted by the storm and lost his focus on Jesus. His faith was shaken when he looked at the strength of the wind and the waves.
Like Peter, I have moments when I almost drownโnot because I donโt believe in God or because I have little trust in Him, but because, as a human being, I want to solve the problems that come my way. Sometimes, these problems become distractions and make me forget that, on my own, I am not capable of facing everything.
It becomes heavy to the point that I am reminded that I cannot handle everything on my own, and so I learn to offer it to the Lord. Every time I do, things never necessarily become easier, but they become possible.
