The Canonical Possession of the Diocese

As we prayerfully prepare for the Canonical Installation of Most Rev. Louie P. Galbines, SThD, DD, as the 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Bacolod, let us deepen our understanding of an important moment in the life of the Churchβ€”the Canonical Possession of the Diocese.

Canonical Possession is the juridical act by which a bishop officially assumes the pastoral governance of the particular Church entrusted to him by the Holy Father. Through this act, the bishop begins the full exercise of his ministry of teaching, sanctifying, and governing the faithful of the diocese.

The Code of Canon Law (Canon 382 Β§3) reminds us that a bishop may not exercise the office entrusted to him before he has taken canonical possession of the diocese. This underscores that episcopal ministry is not merely ceremonial but is exercised in communion with the universal Church and according to her sacred laws.

May this catechesis help us appreciate the beauty and order of the Church's life as we joyfully prepare to welcome our new shepherd. Let us continue to accompany Bishop Louie with our prayers, that the Holy Spirit may guide him in leading the People of God in the Diocese of Bacolod.

Rev. Fr. Mitchel J. Guadalupe led the celebration of the Holy Hour on the eve of the Ordination to the Holy Orders of Rev. Arzham Jan L. Cabatac.

In his reflection, Fr. Mitch reminded the ordinand that he is called to walk with the Lord in faithful discipleship. He emphasized that humility and joy must always be at the heart of his vocation, encouraging him to serve God's people with a generous, humble, and joyful spirit, faithfully reflecting the love of Christ in his priestly ministry.
