Friday of the 8th Week in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel:

"May no one eat of your fruit again!"

Insight:
The episode of the fig tree which bears no fruit is a reminder to us to become fruitful Christians in our communities and workplaces.

"Is it not written:
My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples?
But you have made it a den of thieves."

Insight:
This is a reminder for us that a place of worship is a sacred place.

We come to honor God, to be in His presence. So, let's show our respect with the clothes we wear, our words, and actions. Let us not be distracted by wordly things, but focus on His Holy Presence.

Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest

Today's Gospel narrates the story of Jesus' Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

In relation to today's theme, the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest, commemorates Christ's priesthood that as the Eternal High Priest not only does Jesus presides over the sacrifice but He also is the very sacrifice who offered His life for our salvation.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus showed His humanity in the following passages:

"My soul is very sorrowful, even to death."

"My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me."

"My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done."

Today, we pray for our priests that they would continue to be like Christ: compassionate, trustworthy, ever-living to intercede for humanity before the Father.

Wednesday of the 8th Week in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel, James and John, sons of Zebedee, asked Jesus that they be seated on His right and left when He sits in His glory and he answered them, "You do not know what you are asking."

Insight:

To know God's will, one must have an understanding and faith of the Father's will.

The Apostles heard, saw, and touched Jesus but that was not enough. They have to have understanding and faith of His will.

Jesus teaches us service and humility. "For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many."

Monday
Mary, Mother of the Church

Today, we remember Mary as the Mother of the Church, as she has remained faithful from the Lord's Conception, to His death on the Cross, and to His Resurrection. At the same time, she remained with the disciples even after Christ's Death and was with them when the Holy Spirit was sent down from Heaven, the birth of the Church.

In the First Reading:

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, He gave hope to mankind when He said to the serpent, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at His heel."

In the Gospel:

Mary remained at the foot of the Cross when Jesus was crucified. Among His last words were when He entrusted Mary to His disciple, "Behold, your mother."

Mary was not only a mother to Jesus but a mother to the whole Church.

A mother listens, comforts, guides, stays even if others do not.

Mother Mary, pray for us!

Pentecost Sunday
Theme: "Peace be with you."

First Reading:

It describes the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. "And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind...then there appeared to them as tongues of fire...and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit..."

Insight:

Thr Holy Spirit recreated individuals, even communities. The once timid fearful Apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, now boldly proclaim the Good News to other people.

"Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth."

Second Reading:

St. Paul compares our human life to a human body. "As a body is one though it has many parts, and all parts of the body though many, are one body, so also is Christ."

Insight:

Though the body has many parts, these are united because of its head.

There is unity in diversity and diversity is rooted in unity. We may be different from each other but we are one in Christ.

The Gospel:

"Peace be with you." Jesus greeted His disciples who were in hiding, fearful and anxious. "They rejoiced when they saw Him."

"Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

Insight:

Everthing came to pass: Jesus' Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, so that Jesus could send the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit came to heal our wounds, so we could have peace. When we forgive, not only is the person forgiven who has found peace, but, we, too, are blessed with peace.

Easter Weekday

In the Gospel, Jesus asked Peter three times and three times Peter replied and Jesus instructed what Peter has to do.

1. Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?
Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.
Feed my lambs.

2. Simon, son of John, do you love me?
Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.
Tend my sheep.

3. Simon, son of John, do you love me?
Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.
Feed my sheep.

Insights:

The three times Jesus asked Peter is congruent to Peter's denial three times when Jesus was arrested and brought to trial.

Peter was afraid of what Jesus will say to him when they saw each other again.

But Jesus was not angry. His words and actions toward Peter showed forgiveness.

And Peter was a changed man after that. He boldly proclaimed the Good News to other people which led to his martyrdom as Jesus foretold the kind of death Peter will have after he followed Jesus, "But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go."

May our love for others be like that of Jesus and Peter...forgiveness and love on the part of Jesus and faithfulness and humility on the part of Peter.
