The spirit of true fasting and prayer is the spirit which yields mind, heart, and will to God.”

True fasting and prayer are not just about denying food, but surrendering the whole self to God—our thoughts, emotions, and decisions. As Ellen G. White points out, the power of prayer comes when the soul is fully yielded. This aligns with Scripture:

“Rend your heart and not your garments…” (Joel 2:13)

When Jesus fasted, He prayed, “Not my will, but thine be done” (Luke 22:42). That is the heart of true fasting—a quiet submission that lets God lead. It is not about impressing God but inviting Him to reign in us.
