Today, from his beloved hometown of Baao, Camarines Sur, we proudly commemorate the 175th Birth Anniversary of The Most Reverend Jorge Alfonso Imperial Barlin, the first Filipino Bishop.

Born on April 23, 1850, to Mateo Alfonso Barlin and Francisca Imperial, Bishop Barlin would go on to be ordained to the priesthood in 1874 by Bishop Francisco Gainza, O.P. His integrity and leadership were recognized when he was appointed as the 28th Bishop of Nueva Caceres in 1905 and consecrated in 1906—the first Filipino to ever be elevated to the episcopacy.

He is also remembered as the only native Filipino diocesan bishop of his time to set foot in the Holy See. He died in Rome on September 4, 1909, and is laid to rest in the Campo Verano, Rome.

As Baaoeños, we carry this legacy with deep pride and gratitude. May the life and witness of Bishop Barlin continue to inspire us to live out our faith with courage, wisdom, and love for Church and country.
