REGINA CAELI | Every year on August 22, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast that invites the faithful to honor Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This special celebration, instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1954 through his encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam (“To the Queen of Heaven”), highlights Mary’s unique dignity and role in the history of salvation.

The memorial is celebrated eight days after the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15, emphasizing the deep connection between these two events. After Mary was taken body and soul into heaven, she was crowned with glory by her Son, Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. Her queenship does not signify earthly power but rather a spiritual authority rooted in humility, obedience, and love. Mary reigns as a servant-queen, interceding for her children and leading them closer to Christ.

Sacred Scripture reflects this reality. The angel Gabriel’s announcement in Luke 1:32-33 reveals that Mary’s Son “will reign over the house of Jacob forever,” signifying her close participation in Christ’s kingship. Likewise, Revelation 12:1 depicts “a woman clothed with the sun, with a crown of twelve stars,” a traditional image of Mary glorified in heaven.

Through this memorial, the Church reminds us that Mary’s queenship flows entirely from her Son. Her exalted role points us to the victory of Christ, who has conquered sin and death. As our Mother and Queen, Mary lovingly intercedes for us, guiding us to live with faith, hope, and charity.

As we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary, we are called to imitate her humility, trust, and devotion to God. By honoring her, we deepen our love for Christ, the source of her glory and the foundation of our salvation.

In culmination of the 𝟒𝟓𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮, the Municipality of Asturias proudly joins 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐭𝐮𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐀 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡, 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 on 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, in Cebu City.

The revered image of 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐬, 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮, Patron Saint of Asturias, will join the patron saints of the municipalities and cities of Cebu Province in a 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 from the Cebu Provincial Capitol to the Cebu City Sports Complex.

The celebration will culminate in a Holy Mass, the Blessing of Carrozas, and the 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐭𝐮𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬, bringing together Cebu's enduring expressions of faith, heritage, culture, and devotion.
