The life of Jesus Christ, as told in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), is the central narrative of Christianity. It is generally divided into several key phases:
Birth and Early Life
The Nativity: Jesus was born in Bethlehem to the Virgin Mary, a miracle conceived by the Holy Spirit. His birth was humble, occurring in a stable where he was visited by shepherds and wise men.
The Escape: To avoid King Herod’s decree to kill infants, his family fled to Egypt before eventually settling in Nazareth, where he grew up as a carpenter.
Early Wisdom: The only recorded event of his youth is at age 12, when he was found in the Temple in Jerusalem, astonishing religious leaders with his deep understanding of God.
2. Public Ministry
At approximately age 30, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, signaling the start of his active mission.
The Twelve Apostles: He chose 12 close followers to travel with him as he preached throughout Galilee and Judea.
Major Teachings: He taught extensively using parables (short stories with moral lessons) and delivered the Sermon on the Mount, which outlined ethical living through the Beatitudes. Core themes included loving one’s enemies, humility, and the arrival of the "Kingdom of God".
Miracles: He performed over 30 recorded miracles to demonstrate his authority, including healing the sick, walking on water, and raising the dead (most notably Lazarus).
3. Death and Resurrection
The final week of Jesus' life, known as the Passion, took place in Jerusalem.
The Last Supper: Jesus shared a final meal with his disciples, instituting the Eucharist (Communion).
Betrayal and Trial: He was betrayed by his disciple Judas Iscariot, arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, and put through a series of trials before Roman Governor Pontius Pilate.
The Crucifixion: Sentenced to death, Jesus was crucified on a cross at Golgotha. Christians believe his death served as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of humanity.
The Resurrection: Three days after his burial, Jesus rose from the dead. He appeared to his followers over 40 days, proving he had overcome death.
The Ascension: Finally, he ascended into heaven, promising to return one day.
