THE STATIONAL MASS

A stational liturgy is an ancient practice of the Roman Church where the Pope presides over the liturgy that usually begins a “statio” or a stational church where a collect is prayed before processing to another church to celebrate the Mass.

The practice still stands at Rome during Lent, with the Pope presiding over during Ash Wednesday where the stational church is at Sant’ Anselmo where the liturgy begins going to Santa Sabina where Mass is celebrated. It is also now prescribed during the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, in which the Missal calls for a gathering to “take place at a smaller church or other suitable place other than inside the church to which the procession will go” for the blessing of candles. Another example is the Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

The Liturgy on September 8, follows the Roman Stational Liturgy. The Mass, presided by the Archbishop with the priests of archdiocese, begins at the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando, where the introductory rites and the penitential procession going to the Provincial Capitol for the Mass commences.

The chanting of the Litany of the Saints, Kagalayan king Indu ring Kapaldanan and Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary accompanies the procession.

Upon reaching the altar at the Capitol, the re-enactment of the Canonical Coronation takes place followed by the celebration of the Holy Mass.
