HELL- According to Scriptures, hell is the fiery dark place of torment prepared for those condemned to ETERNAL PUNISHMENT at the last judgment. In hell, the unrepentant suffer ETERNALLY the wrath and displeasure of God- Mat. 8:12, 13:42, 22:13, 25:41, 2 Thes. 1:7-9, 2 Pet. 3:7, Rev. 20:11-15. As severe as this doctrine seems, most christians have understood the existence of hell as reflecting Gods just display of His HOLY WRATH against those who refuse to repent of their sin and accept Gods forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ. The Old Testament explicitly teaches little about hell. The word sheol, translated as HADES in the SEPTUAGINT occurs sixty six times in the Old Testament and refers to the final abode of all the dead, without moral distinction. The only Old Testament passage that clearly distinguishes the destinies of the righteous and the wicked is Daniel 12:1-2. The Greek word gehenna, hell, translate the Hebrew VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM, which is located south of Jerusalem, as was stated in 2Kings 23:10. The valley was associated with child sacrifice- 2 Chronicles 28:3, Jeremiah 7:31-32- and became Jerusalems fiery garbage dump. The prophet Isaiah draws on this grotesque image in his depiction of the new heavens and earth: AND THEY WILL GO OUT AND LOOK AT THE DEAD BODIES OF THOSE WHO REBELLED AGAINST ME, THEIR WORM WILL NOT DIE, NOR WILL THEIR FIRE BE QUENCHED, AND THEY WILL BE LOATHSOME TO THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE.- Isa. 66:24. New Testament authors used this graphic imagery to describe the place of future retribution. Jesus spoke more on the subject of hell than any other biblical person, graphically referring to hell as a lake of fire, a place of outer darkness, a place where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, and where the worm never dies- Mat.13:42, 50, 22:13, 25:41, Mark 9:47-48. Various New Testament writers wrote of the penalty and the condition of hell as unending- Rom. 2:5, 2Thes.1:9, 2 Pet. 2:17, Jude 13.
