In a moment filled with grace and deep communion, Bishop Ruperto Cruz Santos, together with priests from the Diocese of Antipolo, joined the faithful at the Vatican for the General Audience. There, with humility and joy, they were blessed to meet the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV.

This encounter was more than a formal gesture—it was a living sign of faith and unity. Bishop Ruperto and his brother priests carried with them the prayers and hopes of the Filipino faithful, offering them before the Successor of Peter.

It was a holy moment that reminded us of the Church’s mission: to walk together, to serve with love, and to remain one family in Christ. For the Filipino Church, this meeting shines as a symbol of communion and pastoral care, a reminder that our voices and our journey are embraced within the heart of the universal Church.

San Isidro Labrador, ipanalangin mo kami.

Today, May 26, 2026, is the Memorial of Saint Philip Neri. Our Holy Mass is at 6:00 PM, following the resumption of our regular Tuesday Novena to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus which starts at 5:30 PM.

Born in Florence, Italy, Saint Philip Neri grew up in a loving middle-class family and was affectionately called “Pippo Buono” or “good little Philip” because of his cheerful and kind nature. Though he lost his mother at a young age, Saint Philip was raised with strong faith and became known for his prayerfulness even as a child. At eighteen, he was sent to live with a wealthy relative who hoped to make him his heir. Yet Saint Philip felt God calling him to a different life and chose faith over comfort and wealth.

In 1533, Saint Philip went to Rome with little more than trust in God. Living simply, often eating only bread and water, Saint Philip spent years in prayer, service, and caring for the poor and sick. A profound spiritual experience during prayer deeply transformed Saint Philip, filling his heart with extraordinary love for God. From this encounter, he began dedicating himself fully to renewing the spiritual life of the city.

Rather than preaching harshly, Saint Philip attracted people through joy, kindness, humor, and genuine friendship. He gathered young men for prayer, service, and holy conversations, eventually founding the Congregation of the Oratory in 1575. As a priest, Saint Philip became a beloved confessor known for wisdom and holiness. Through personal encounters, compassionate guidance, and tireless ministry, Saint Philip helped rekindle the faith of countless people in a Rome weakened by corruption and spiritual indifference.

Rather than beginning with strict correction or fear, Saint Philip believed in winning souls through love, patience, and friendship. This spirit is beautifully reflected in one of Saint Philip’s well-known sayings: “First let a little love find entrance into their hearts, and the rest will follow.” For Saint Philip, true conversion began not with rules alone, but with a genuine encounter with kindness and mercy. Once people felt loved and welcomed, their hearts slowly opened to prayer, virtue, and the transforming grace of God.

For this reason, Saint Philip Neri became known as the “Apostle of Rome,” because he re-evangelized the city one soul at a time, not through force or fear, but through joyful witness, friendship, and the love of Christ, showing that holiness can be warm, joyful, and deeply human.

Saint Philip Neri, pray for us.

ROME AND VATICAN

Today, we journeyed as pilgrims through the heart of the Eternal City, Rome, prayerfully visiting the four Major Basilicas—the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Peter’s Basilica. In each sacred place, we encountered the beauty and depth of our Catholic faith and were reminded of Christ’s abiding presence in His Church.

In the evening, we were graciously welcomed at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino for the celebration of the Holy Mass and dinner—an occasion filled with grace, fraternity, and heartfelt gratitude.

Fr. Aly Barcinal presided over the Eucharistic Celebration on the Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church. In his homily, he reflected on the beautiful vocation of priests, called not only to be fathers to their parishioners, but also to embody the tender and nurturing care of a mother. From the loving example of our Blessed Mother Mary, priests learn how to serve with compassion, gentleness, and selfless devotion.

Fr. Aly also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Ruperto Santos for his personal care, fatherly presence, and countless gestures of kindness and concern throughout the pilgrimage. Having our dear bishop journey with the clergy through the sacred Marian shrines made the pilgrimage all the more meaningful and memorable. His presence was a constant reminder of communion, guidance, and pastoral love.

As our pilgrimage nears its conclusion, we prepare to return to our respective assignments—facing once again the struggles, concerns, and needs of the faithful entrusted to our care. In those moments of challenge and weariness, Mary continues to remind us that to serve is to give, and to give is to share in the very love of Christ. She teaches us that true leadership is not found in position or authority, but in presence—simply being there for others with love and fidelity.

Today, we look once more to Mary as our guide and model in this sacred journey of priestly ministry. She walks with us as the perfect companion, leading us always closer to her Son.

Today, May 25, 2026, is the Memorial of Mary Mother of the Church. Our Holy Mass is at 6:00 PM, following the resumption of our regular Monday Novena to Saint Anthony the Abbot which starts at 5:30 PM and the praying of Angelus shortly before the start of the Mass.

On February 11, 2018, Pope Francis, through the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, officially added the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church to the General Roman Calendar. It is now celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost. This feast highlights Mary’s special place in the life of the Church: she is the Mother of Christ, who is the Head of the Church, and therefore also the spiritual Mother of all the faithful. Earlier, Pope Saint Paul VI had already affirmed this title on November 21, 1964, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council, inviting the faithful to honor Mary more deeply under this beautiful name.

The Memorial is closely linked with the Gospel passage from John 19:25–27, where Jesus, from the Cross, entrusted His Mother to the beloved disciple, saying, “Woman, behold your son… Behold your mother.” In the Church’s understanding, the beloved disciple represents every disciple of Christ. In that moment of sacrifice and love, Jesus was not only speaking to John personally but was also giving Mary as a mother to the whole Church. Thus, as Christ completed His saving work, Mary was given to all the redeemed as their spiritual mother.

This title, “Mother of the Church,” beautifully expresses Mary’s close relationship with Christ and His Body, the Church. While she is uniquely honored as the Mother of God, she also walks closely with believers as a true mother, companion, and model of faith. Through her example of trust and obedience, she continues to lead the Church closer to Christ and His mission of salvation.

In this light, popular devotions such as our ongoing Flores de Mayo become a living expression of this motherhood of Mary, as the faithful, especially the young, offer flowers and prayers to her, honoring her as they grow in love for Christ through her maternal guidance.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
