๐๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: We live in a community, sometimes we may argue or disagree with each other. A church is a community where this problem can happen. In a church, people with different pasts and ideas come together to work for the Lord. Because we are all different, we may disagree. Some disagreements can cause misunderstandings between members.
This week, we will study Joshua 22. In this chapter, the people have a misunderstanding. In the beginning of the book of Joshua, Joshua commanded some of the family groups of Israel on the east side of the Jordan River to come help the family groups on the west side (Joshua 1:12โ18). The family groups from the east side came over to help the other family groups win their land. So, now these family groups from the east side are free to go back home across the river. But before they do, these family groups build an altar on the east side. This altar makes the Israelites who live on the west side of the Jordan River very upset.

โ The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh received land east of the Jordan River. They promised to help the other tribes conquer Canaan before returning to their own land.
โ They kept their word. For about seven years, they fought alongside their brothers, leaving their families behind. Their loyalty helped keep Israel united as one nation under God, despite the river separating them.
โ Joshua sent them home with rich blessings and a warning: "๐ฟ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐
(Joshua 22:5). Their service was not just to other people, but to God Himself. This is our calling too: to work for God in all we do (Ephesians 6:7).
โ Life brings challenges and we can become discouraged. Remembering we serve God gives us a higher purpose to keep going.

โ Near the place where Joshua had erected a memorial of the miraculous crossing of the Jordan, the two and a half tribes built an altar similar to the altar of the Sanctuary (Josh. 22:10, 28).
โ This act was interpreted as a transgression of the law that prohibited offering sacrifices in a place other than the altar of burnt offerings in the Sanctuary (Lev. 17:8-9).
โ The family groups who lived on the east side of the Jordan River didnโt ask for permission to build the altar. They didnโt talk with Joshua or Eleazar or other leaders first. Now they have a misunderstanding that could lead to an awful fight between all the family groups of Israel.
โ The rest of the Israelites decided to eradicate this sin by attacking their brothers (Josh. 22:12). But God intervened to prevent a bloody civil war. He raised up people who chose not to judge without all the evidence; they granted the benefit of the doubt; and they decided to give their brothers the opportunity to explain themselves (Josh. 22:13-14).

Phinehas is the son of Eleazar, who is the high priest. The high priest is the top religious leader for Israel. Phinehas will become high priest after Eleazar dies (Joshua 24:33).
โ In his speech, he linked this sin to Achan. The word โ๐ฌ๐ข๐งโ in this verse is the same Hebrew word that the Bible uses to talk about Achanโs sin (Joshua 7:1), and equated it with the sin supposedly committed by the two and a half tribes (Josh. 22:16-20).
โ Phinehas's speech made perfect sense. If sacrifices were offered on the newly erected altar, God would punish all of Israel for it (Josh. 22:18b).
โ However, he gave them the opportunity to rectify this mistake, before they committed the sin: he offered them the chance to return to the Jordan side where the Sanctuary was (Josh. 22:19).

โ When the Israelites did not know the motivations of their brothers for building the altar, they assumed: rebellion, a desire for separation, and divine punishment.
โ The reality was: a desire to remain united with their brothers and avoid a future separation on the part of the Israelites (Josh. 22:24-26).
โ Although the accused tribes could have felt offended by the accusations and reacted violently in their defense, thanks to their friendly response, war was avoided.
โ When the Israelites from the west side of the Jordan hear this answer, they are filled with joy. They are happy that their fears were wrong. They have no reason to feel upset or afraid. The meeting solves the problems and stops civil war from happening. All the family groups continue to be one people in the Lord.

โ We canโt have peace and agreement if we donโt follow Godโs rules. But punishment should always be our last plan, not our first. First, we should try to be at peace and solve our problems. For sure, our churches would be different if we always remember to follow these rules.
