SANTACRUZAN SEASON IS HERE
Let’s keep the true focus on the Cross.

As the Santacruzan season begins, communities come alive with color, devotion, and tradition. The procession of queens, dressed in elegance and grace, is not simply a display of beauty—it is a living catechism, a storytelling of faith passed on through generations. At the heart of it all is the Holy Cross, the very reason why this celebration exists.

Each “queen” in the Santacruzan represents more than a title or a role. Her beauty, poise, and presence are meant to draw our attention—not to herself—but beyond herself. As shared in the reflections of Socrates Villegas, their beauty becomes like arrows pointing us to the sacred center of the celebration: the Cross of Christ. It is a reminder that true beauty is not just seen outwardly, but is rooted in faith, humility, and devotion.

The story behind the Santacruzan leads us back to Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, who journeyed to find the Cross on which Jesus was crucified. Her discovery of the True Cross is not just a historical moment—it is a powerful symbol of seeking Christ in the midst of the world. It reminds us that the Cross, though a sign of suffering, is ultimately a sign of love, sacrifice, and redemption.

In today’s celebration, it is easy to be captivated by the gowns, the lights, and the pageantry. But the deeper invitation is to look beyond these and rediscover the meaning of the Cross in our own lives. The Santacruzan calls us to reflect: How do we carry our own crosses? How do we respond to Christ’s sacrifice?

So as we celebrate, may we not lose sight of what truly matters. May every step in the procession, every flower offered, and every crown worn lead us back to Christ. Because in the end, the Santacruzan is not about showcasing beauty—it is about pointing hearts to the Cross, where love was fully given and where we are called to return.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: FLORES DE MAYO & SANTACRUZAN

• FLORES DE MAYO

—Flores de Mayo, also known as Flores de Maria, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the Philippines. It is a month-long Catholic devotion held every May, especially popular across many provinces, where the faithful offer flowers and prayers in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

—The tradition of dedicating a month to Mary dates back to the Baroque period. While it was not originally observed in May, the devotion consisted of daily spiritual practices for thirty days, all centered on honoring the Virgin Mary.

• SANTACRUZAN

—Santacruzan should not be mistaken for a beauty pageant or fashion show. Although it is colorful and festive, it is deeply rooted in religious tradition. It is also distinct from Flores de Mayo, which is a devotional practice rather than a procession.

—Derived from the Spanish words “santa” (holy) and “cruz” (cross), Santacruzan is a religious-historical procession held in many communities throughout May. It commemorates Queen Helena’s search for the Holy Cross, accompanied by her son, Emperor Constantine the Great. According to tradition, three crosses were found, and the true cross was identified through a miraculous healing. The event concludes with a celebration marking the success of their sacred quest.
