😮 DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE TWO TABLES AT EVERY MASS? ✝️
At first glance, it seems like there is just one altar in the church, a simple table for the Eucharist. But look closer: there are actually two sacred tables at every Mass, each revealing the fullness of Christ.
✝️ 1) THE TABLE OF THE WORD - THE AMBO
The Ambo is a table, too. It is where the Word of God is proclaimed. Every reading, every Gospel, every homily begins here. The Ambo is not just wood or stone; it is a throne for God’s voice, a place where heaven speaks to earth.
The Word prepares us for the Eucharist. It teaches us how to make Christ alive in our hearts, and how we, in turn, live in Him. When the priest steps closer to the people during the homily, it is a living echo of Jesus on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24): the Word draws near, touches hearts, and awakens faith.
✝️ 2) THE TABLE OF SACRIFICE - THE ALTAR
Then there is the altar, the other table. This is where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. The altar is the table of sacrifice, the throne of the Lamb, the place where heaven touches earth in the Eucharist.
Notice the difference: the Ambo is for hearing and forming the heart, the altar is for receiving and living Christ Himself. Together, these two tables show Christ in totality:
The Ambo reveals His ministerial life, His Word and teaching.
The Altar reveals His sacrificial life, His giving of Himself for us.
✝️ 3) TWO TABLES, ONE MISSION
The priest moves between these tables in the Mass, not randomly, but purposefully:
From the Ambo, he announces the Word, preparing hearts to receive Christ.
From the altar, he offers Christ Himself, transforming us in His Body and Blood.
Two tables, two mysteries, one divine plan: first, God speaks; then, God gives Himself.
✝️SO
Next time you attend Mass, remember:
There are two tables:
1️⃣ The Ambo - where God speaks and forms our hearts.
2️⃣ The Altar - where God gives Himself and transforms us.
The priest’s movements between these tables are not distractions, they are sacramental bridges, connecting heaven and earth, Word and Eucharist, Christ and His people.
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way?” (Luke 24:32)
🙏 God bless you
