Devotional: "The Paradox of Life"
Scripture: Matthew 10:39 KJV
"He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."
Reflection:
At first glance, the words of Jesus in this verse might seem paradoxical. How can losing something lead to finding it? How can seeking to preserve our life result in losing it? This statement is a powerful reminder that the values of the Kingdom of God are often the opposite of the values of this world. In our pursuit of personal success, comfort, and control, we often find ourselves empty, lost, and spiritually unfulfilled. But in surrendering our lives to God—laying down our selfish desires, ambitions, and comforts for His sake—we discover the true meaning and purpose of life.
Jesus calls us to follow Him with radical surrender, where our identity and purpose are no longer centered on ourselves but on Him. To "lose our life" means to let go of our self-centered pursuits and live with a heart that seeks His will above all else. It’s about placing our priorities, our goals, and even our dreams under His Lordship. When we do this, we experience the paradox that Jesus speaks of: true fulfillment and life are found not in self-preservation but in self-sacrifice for Him.
Application:
Ask yourself today: What are you holding on to that keeps you from fully surrendering to Jesus? Is it your career, your relationships, or your desire for comfort? The invitation from Jesus is to lose those things for His sake, and in doing so, find the abundant life He promises. It's not an easy call, but it is the most rewarding one.
Today, choose to surrender. Trust that when you lose your life for His sake, He will give you a life far greater than you ever imagined. In His presence, you will discover purpose, peace, and joy that cannot be found anywhere else.
Prayer:
Lord, I surrender my life to You today. Help me to let go of my selfish desires and ambitions, and give me the strength to follow You wholeheartedly. Teach me to live for You and not for myself, knowing that in doing so, I will find the true life You have promised. Thank You for Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
