The will of God for your life isn’t a secret code to crack. Scripture lays it out clearly - it’s mostly about who you become and how you live, not just what job you take or where you go.
Here’s the core of it:
1. To be saved and know Jesus
God’s primary will is relationship. He wants you with Him, not distant.
1 Timothy 2:3-4
“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
2. To be made holy / sanctified
God cares more about your character than your circumstances. He wants sin broken off your life so you reflect Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:3
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality.”
Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
3. To rejoice, pray, and give thanks in everything
Gratitude and dependence keep your heart aligned with Him, even in hard seasons.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
4.To do good and trust Him with suffering
When life doesn’t make sense, God’s will is that you keep doing right and trust Him.
1 Peter 2:15
“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”
1 Peter 4:19
“Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.”
5. To make disciples and live on mission
You’re saved to be part of His work in the world.
Matthew 28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
How this works practically:
1. Start with what’s clear:
If you’re not obeying the verses above, God won’t usually reveal the “next step” yet. Holiness, prayer, gratitude, and sharing Jesus come first.
2. Wisdom + counsel + peace.
For decisions not directly in Scripture, God guides through His Word, godly counsel, and the peace of the Spirit.
3.Trust Him with the details Romans 8:28 -
He works all things for the good of those who love Him.
God’s will is that you know Jesus, become like Jesus, and make Jesus known.
