A Special Bond of Spiritual Affinity!
A CATECHISM ABOUT THE SPECIAL BOND OF SPIRITUAL AFFINITY
In 2008, the Apostolic Penitentiary has renewed the favor of granting the privilege of a Plenary Indulgence to all the Marian Shrines united by a Spiritalis Vinculi Affinitatis (Spiritual Bond of Affinity) to the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The said basilica has dominated over the city of Rome for 16 centuries as the Marian shrine par excellence, located at the summit of the Esquiline Hill. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary indicated and inspired the construction of her shrine on the hill. She appeared in a dream to the aristocrat, Giovanni, and to Pope Liberius, asking for the construction of a church in her honor, in a place that she would miraculously reveal through a miracle of the snows. The relic of the Holy Crib, the manger in which the Baby Jesus was laid, highlights the importance of this basilica as the โBethlehem of the Westโ. The first Christmas night Mass was celebrated here and Pontiffs have been keeping this tradition alive for centuries.
The basilica houses an important Marian icon, the Salus Populi Romani. According to tradition, it was made by St. Luke the Evangelist, the patron saint of painters. During an epidemic, the icon was taken in procession through the streets of Rome for three days. Pope Gregory I (590-604) is said to have paused in prayer in front of the icon to implore for an end to the plague.
