As part of its global relief efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated over 39,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) gowns and 40,000 face masks to the Naval Reserve Command (NRC) of the Philippine Navy on August 5, 2021.

Extending the blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all ancestors is central to the work that occurs in temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In areas where the incidence of COVID-19 is lower and public health guidelines for gathering can be appropriately met, members of the Church in select temple districts will soon be allowed to perform essential ordinances (ceremonies) on behalf of those who have died.

During this new phase of temple reopenings, a limited number of temple patrons may attend the temple by appointment only in the following locations:
• Nuku’alofa Tonga Temple
• Apia Samoa Temple
• Brisbane Australia Temple
• Taipei Taiwan Temple

God “has all power, all wisdom, and all understanding; he comprehendeth all things, and he is a merciful Being, even unto salvation, to those who will repent and believe on his name” (Alma 26:35).

So, during times of deep distress, as when illness reaches pandemic proportions, the most natural thing for us to do is to call upon our Heavenly Father and His Son—the Master Healer—to show forth Their marvelous power to bless the people of the earth.

As I mentioned in general conference a few days ago, I am calling for another worldwide fast. For all whose health may permit, let us fast, pray, and unite our faith once again. Let us prayerfully plead for relief from this global pandemic.

I invite all, including those not of our faith, to fast and pray in two days on Good Friday, April 10, that the present pandemic may be controlled, caregivers protected, the economy strengthened, and life normalized.

How do we fast? Two meals, or a period of 24 hours, is customary. But you decide what would constitute a sacrifice for you, as you remember the supreme sacrifice the Savior made for you. Let us unite in pleading for healing throughout the world.

A lot of people ask us who the guy on top of the temples is, why he has a trumpet, and why he is so important.

This is the angel Moroni, the last person to hold the golden plates of the book of Mormon in the year 400 AD. His trumpet symbolizes both the spreading of the gospel throughout the world as well as the second coming of the Savior.

He is a symbol of the Restoration of the gospel, which brings hope and greater happiness into our lives.

Temples are literally houses of the Lord. They are places where individuals can go to make sacred promises with God, feel His spirit, and escape from the hectic demands of day-to-day life.

Inside temples, couples can be married for eternity, not just “’til death do you part.”

Because each temple is the House of the Lord, we can feel a special closeness to God when we visit. This feeling can provide hope when we have challenges and direction when we need guidance in our lives. The temple is also where we can receive the greatest blessings God has to offer us, including the opportunity to live with our families forever, even after we die. We can also honor and serve our deceased loved ones by providing these blessings to them as we act on their behalf.
