An Affiliate of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome The veneration to Our Lady of Charity dates back from time immemorial. It was brought to Agoo by one of the Augustinian priests who served in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, where our Lady of Charity was first enthroned and venerated. Benito Sison, former rector of the Basilica of Our Lady o

f Charity, believed that the devotion to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Charity was derived from an older devotion to the same statue that flourished in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Sison, the statue of Our Lady of Charity dates back to the seventeenth century, but that particular statue was desecrated and the Agoo's statue, therefore, may be the oldest image of Our Lady of Charity in the country. It was the late Bishop Victorino Ligot, DD, the first bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando de La Union, who petitioned Rome for the canonical coronation of the statue, and this coronation was officiated by Archbishop Carmine Rocco, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, on May 1, 1971, through the leadership of Congressman Jose D. The rose-stained window in the dome of the Basilica above the main altar is the testimony of that consecration. The year 1975 earmarked a change: the original Church transformed into a magnificent structure would become a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Charity. Over and above the honor extended to her, she lately received another distinctive place in the basilica, a side-aisle "sanctuary" with a fitting throne. This was erected for the purpose of accessibility to Marian devotees for the veneration of the Blessed Mother under her title Our Lady of Charity.

IN TIMES OF CALAMITIES
Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to You in gratitude,
for the wonders of creation of which we are part,
for Your providence in sustaining us in our needs, and
for Your wisdom that guides the course of the universe.

We acknowledge our sins against You and
the rest of Your creation.
We have not been good stewards of nature.
We have confused Your command to subdue the earth.

The environment is made to suffer our wrongdoing,
and now we reap the harvest of our abuse and indifference. Global warming is upon us.
Typhoons, floods, volcanic eruption,
and other natural calamities
occur in the increasing number and intensity.

We turn to you, our loving Father, and beg forgiveness
for our sins. We ask that we, our loved ones and our
hard earned possessions be spared from the threat of calamities, natural and man-made. We beseech You
to inspire us all to grow into responsible stewards of Your creation, and generous neighbors to those in need. AMEN.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

The Church is One because she is united in one faith, one baptism, and one Lord. She is Holy because Christ Himself is holy and continues to sanctify His people through the sacraments. She is Catholic because the Gospel is proclaimed to all nations, embracing every people and culture. She is Apostolic because the Church remains rooted in the teachings and mission entrusted by Christ to the Apostles.

As members of the Church, may we continue to live in unity, grow in holiness, proclaim the Gospel, and remain faithful to the apostolic faith handed down through generations.

Happy Birthday to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!

Today, we rejoice in celebrating the birth of the Church on the great feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles as they gathered in prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary. From a humble upper room in Jerusalem began a living and enduring mission that continues to touch and transform hearts to this day. Founded by Christ over two thousand years ago, the Church remains steadfast in proclaiming the Gospel to all nations and every generation.

On this blessed Pentecost Sunday, may the Holy Spirit renew our hearts, strengthen our faith, and guide us to live as true disciples of Christ. Let us be instruments of peace, love, and unity wherever we go.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, may we remember that His reign is founded on love, mercy, and truth. It is a reminder that Christ has risen to glory, yet remains with us always, guiding us in faith and calling us to be witnesses of His love.

"I am with you always, until the end of the world."

St. Carlo Acutis, through this visitation, reminds us that we must deepen our faith and love in the Holy Eucharist and live a life centered on Christ, with humility, holiness, and compassion.

Through prayer, charity, purity of heart, and love for the poor, he showed that young people are not merely the future of the Church, but her living present.
