WHY DID LUTHER CHOOSE HALLOWEEN?
It is no accident that the great reformer chose October 31 to post his 95 objections in 1517.
The origin of Halloween dates back to a pagan harvest Celtic festival known as Samhain. This festival was adopted by the Romans and later the Catholics who ultimately renamed November 1 as “All Saints Day” in honor of the deceased Saints.

Luther’s main concern was the sale of indulgences. He knew on this occasion great crowds, including the educated classes, would be coming to the church to view the “relics” of the saints, another practice he protested. All Saints' Day, was also called All-Hallows Day— and of course the night before was considered All-Hallows Eve, the precursor of the word Halloween.

The church doors of Wittenberg were something of a public bulletin board. Luther knew thousands of pilgrims would see his theses which he hoped would spark study and reform among religious leaders.
It worked better than he expected. Great marketing.
So, happy Reformation Day!

UKRAINE CRISIS DRIVES NEW APPEALS FOR SUNDAY LAWS

With fuel costs soaring since Russia invaded Ukraine, the International Energy Agency is urging, among other things, a Sunday driving reduction laws. Not surprising… Little by little.

The Switzerland Times - March 18, 2022
“The International Energy Agency has set out a 10-point plan to cut global demand for oil by 2.7 million barrels per day.
Governments have been urged to consider introducing “car free Sundays” in big cities and mandating home working at least three days a week to stop the looming crunch in oil supply making the cost of living crisis even worse.
The International Energy Agency, the Paris-based group that advises governments around the world on energy policy, today set out a ten point plan to “reduce the pain caused by high oil prices” by cutting demand for fuel.
Suggestions include reducing the speed limit on motorways by 10km per hour, banning cars from large cities on Sundays, increasing home working and ride sharing, and cutting back on business travel. The IEA said the policies could help cut demand for oil by 2.7 million barrels per day within the next four months.
The suggestions, which will remind some of the three day week adopted by Britain in the 1970s, come against a backdrop of looming bans on Russian oil imports in the US, UK and EU. The IEA said earlier this week that 3 million barrels a day could be lost from the global market come April in what is likely to be the ”biggest supply crisis in decades”.
It said today: “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has thrown global commodity markets into turmoil.”

THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES CONCEDES SUNDAY AS A DAY OF WORSHIP/REST

It took it while, but evidently Pope Francis’ 2019 first ever visit to the UAE to appeal for Christians in the country was very productive.
The UAE, [United Arab Emirates] has agreed to recognize Sunday as a day of rest to accommodate the 800,000 migrant workers in the country. Christianity accounts for 13% of the total population of the UAE but up until this December Sunday was considered a regular workday in the Muslim nation.
(In case you ever wondered how would the Muslim world ever come to support Sunday keeping… This would be exhibit “A”. It would be good to pass this one on and some people may wake up.)

Full report below.

The UAE is adopting a 4.5-day workweek and a Saturday-Sunday weekend

NPR December 8, 2021

The United Arab Emirates just announced some big changes to its work schedule.
The Gulf nation is transitioning to a 4.5-day workweek, with weekends to consist of Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday.
That's significant for two reasons: It likely makes the UAE the first nation to formalize a workweek shorter than five days, and it also brings the country more in line with Western schedules. Up until now, the UAE has had a Friday-Saturday weekend, which is the standard in many predominantly Muslim countries.

The 40-hour workweek isn't working. Reducing it could help with productivity
"The extended weekend comes as part of the UAE government's efforts to boost work-life balance and enhance social wellbeing, while increasing performance to advance the UAE's economic competitiveness," said state news agency WAM, which announced the move on Tuesday.
The changes apply to federal government entities and will take effect on Jan. 1. After that point, Monday through Thursday workdays will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Friday sermons and prayers will be held starting at 1:15 p.m., and WAM said government employees can make arrangements to work from home on Fridays as well as "arrange their working hours on a flexi-time basis."
Schools and private employers may follow suit
The Associated Press reports that private industry will likely follow the government's lead, noting it did so in 2006 when the Saturday-Wednesday workweek changed.
Dubai's education authorities said in a Tuesday tweet that "the private education sector in Dubai will be open in line with the recent UAE Government decision on the working week."

The English-language Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday that schools and universities will follow the new workweek too, with the country's Education Ministry to announce new school timings.
The government says there will be economic and lifestyle benefits
The UAE is the first country in the world to introduce a national workweek shorter than the global five-day week, WAM adds. And Al Jazeera notes that the UAE will become the only Gulf country not to have a Friday-Saturday weekend.
WAM said that the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources proposed the new workweek after "comprehensive benchmarking and feasibility studies" focused on its potential impact on the economy, social and family ties and people's overall well-being.
WAM explains that the move will facilitate financial and trade transactions with countries that follow a Saturday-Sunday weekend, in turn creating stronger business links and opportunities for UAE-based and multinational companies.
And, WAM added, the new workweek is poised to bring the UAE's financial sector into closer alignment with the global real-time trading and communications transactions that drive things such as stock markets, banks and financial institutions.

"The move is expected to boost not only trading opportunities but also add to the flexible, secure and enjoyable lifestyle the UAE offers to its citizens and residents," it concludes.
Abdulrahman Al Awar, the UAE's minister of human resources and emiratisation, told CNBC that the change comes in the context of several reforms aimed at "improving the competitive advantages of the UAE."
Some of those measures from the past year include introducing longer-term visas, loosening regulations on alcohol consumption, decriminalizing the cohabitation of unmarried couples and relaxing punishments for drug offenses.

THIS IS WILD!
World’s Religious Leaders Gather at Vatican To Sign Urgent Appeal

Oct 4 - “Pope Francis and other global religious leaders gathered in person to sign an urgent joint appeal to add their voice to next month's U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP26) to offer concrete solutions to save the planet from "an unprecedented ecological crisis".
The "Faith and Science: Towards COP26" meeting brought together Christian leaders including Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, as well as representatives of Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism and Jainism.”
This rare gathering of religious leaders represent about 84% of the world population.

What all of those concrete solutions will be remains to be seen, but many Christian and Jewish leaders, and even atheists, have suggested a “Green Sabbath” or “Climate Sunday”. The object is to shut down industry one day a week to reduce emission and to let the planet rest.
