The word martyr means “witness.”

Martyrs are the ultimate witnesses to Christ, shedding their blood in testimony to the truth of his salvation. We are all called to witness to Christ through our lives and actions and words. Martyrs did so to the utmost.

By dying for the faith, they most closely conform themselves to Christ, who died for us all that we might have life.

Their witness is a powerful example and inspiration to others, for the conversion of hearts and the entire world to Christ.
