THE CHRISM MASS AND RENEWAL OF PRIESTLY PROMISES AT SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL
ALOTAU | Due to transportation and weather considerations, the Diocese of Alotau–Sideia, together with its new bishop, Bishop Jacek Tendej, CM, gathered in unity to celebrate earlier the Chrism Mass and the Renewal of Priestly Promises at Sacred Heart Cathedral on March 12, 2026.
The Solemn Liturgy began at 5:00 p.m., with all the priests of the diocese, both local clergy and missionary priests, joining as one presbyterate. Religious sisters and brothers, parishioners, and students of Sacred Heart Hagita also participated, making the celebration as an expression of the diocesan family.
In his homily, Bishop Tendej reflected on the beauty and responsibility of the priesthood. He encouraged the faithful to support their priests through prayer and spiritual encouragement, recognizing their vital role in shepherding God’s people. Quoting Scripture, he reminded the assembly of the mission entrusted to priests:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.” (Luke 4:18)
He expressed deep gratitude to the clergy for their generous response to the Lord’s call and their dedication in serving the Church across the islands of the diocese.
The Chrism Mass, he emphasized, reflects the unity between bishop and priests as they renew their commitment to faithfully serve the people entrusted to them:
“This is how one should regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” (1 Corinthians 4:1)
Following the Eucharistic celebration, an agape gathering was held to continue the spirit of fraternity and thanksgiving.
Our gratitude to the parishioners of Sacred Heart Cathedral for their active participation and inspiring animation throughout the celebration.
